Do You Prefer Your Left Side Over The Right For Selfies? Study Discovers Why

Didn't know psychology would be a part of this

Have you ever had a preferred side you like showing to the world? No, I am not referring to your many personalities but the right and left sides of your face. Do you prefer taking selfies from one of those sides? Well, you’re probably not being irrational because research has suggested that your left side looks better.

A study conducted by Annukka Lindell discovered that when taking mirror selfies, people prefer to show their left side. A selfie-taker typically exposes their right cheek when posing in front of a mirror and taking a snapshot of their reflection. A predilection for the right cheek in mirror selfies indicates that the subject posed with their left cheek in front of the mirror since the left and right sides of the mirror are reversed. A similar asymmetric tendency can be seen in people’s painted portraits, where their left cheek is favoured. This researcher thinks it might be a reflection of a person’s irrational desire to expose their more desirable left side.

According to the research, the left side of the face expresses emotions more strongly. This might be explained by how the brain processes emotions. Emotions are primarily controlled by the right side of the brain, which also governs the muscles on the left side of the body. This explains why when asked to pose for an emotional photo, people naturally reveal their left cheek, and when asked to pose for a photo to hide their sentiments, they naturally show their right cheek. Recently, Vidya Balan also spoke about this. She detailed an incident where a fan kept asking her for a selfie because her first selfie was taken from the wrong side. Vidya Balan then went on to talk about having a preference for her left side too but coming to love all of herself as she grows out of that mindset.
