Rekha Menon To Be The First Woman Appointed As The Chairperson Of Nasscom.

Every morning, when I open the newspaper or scroll through news portals I see dozens of rape incidents, domestic violence, child abuse and even murders. Even though I should be used to reading about violence against women by now, they still manage to baffle me. The sheer number of gruesome crimes we read about every day may remind us of a dystopian world but we have to remember that women are also making a lot of progress. Compared to where we were 50 years ago, I’d say we’ve made leaps and bounds of headway. Today, women actually have a voice at the table. In fact, they are leaders sitting in authority positions that were once thought to be only a man’s birthright. Take a look at this. Recently, the IT industry’s apex body Nasscom appointed Rekha M. Menon as their chairperson, making her the first woman, in its 30-year history, to assume the position. I’d say better late than never but I am too excited about this news.

On Thursday, Nasscom announced that Rekha Menon, formerly the Vice President, would succeed U.B. Pravin Rao, chief operating officer, Infosys Ltd, who served as the chairperson for Nasscom in 2020-21. Rekha Menon will be the first woman in Nasscom’s 30-year history to be appointed as chairperson. Nasscom also appointed Krishnan Ramanujam, head of Business & Technology Services, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Ltd as their vice chairperson for 2021-22. Move over men, it’s a woman’s game now!

Talking about her appointment, Rekha Menon said, “The ongoing covid-19 pandemic continues to test the resilience of our more than 4 million people, even as it has created new opportunities for growth with technology emerging as the lifeline for societies and economies across the world. As we cautiously navigate the pandemic, I look forward to working with the Nasscom executive council and its members to drive our industry’s long-term growth.”

According to reports, this newly-appointed management along with Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh will spearhead the IT industry in its digital transformation. This executive council has 40% women leaders and we are here for it.

This is a small step towards gender equality!
