‘Priyanka Chopra Can Speak In Personal Capacity’ Says UN, Shutting Down Pakistan’s Request To Have Her Removed From UNICEF

Everyone with half a brain in our country knows that there’s no middle ground when it comes to politics, not right now at least. With various laws and rulings being passed everyday by the Government of India, the nation finds itself polarised and at wits end because you don’t know what to believe, in a personal capacity. For celebrities, their voice is magnified but then so is the criticism they get. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra has been bearing the brunt of the backlash she received after her tweet that cheered on the Indian armed forces became a whole new level of controversy.

It all started when Priyanka Chopra, took to twitter on February 26th, to share a simple yet powerful tweet saying, “Jai Hind #IndianArmedForces”. This was right after India’s strike on Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed organisations’s base in retaliation to the car bomb attack by them on India, that killed 40 Central Reserve policemen.

In a completely un-related event and appearance, PeeCee was then called out by a Pakistani girl for ‘encouraging nuclear war against Pakistan.’

Priyanka Chopra had the most befitting and proud reply for the woman, for she said, “I have many, many friends from Pakistan and I am from India. War is not something I’m really fond of but I am patriotic, so I’m sorry if I hurt sentiments to people who do love me and have loved me. But I think that all of us have a, sort of, middle ground that we all have to walk. Just like you probably do as well. The way that you came at me right now… girl, don’t yell. We’re all here for love.”

However, it did not sit right with many including Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari who issued a letter to the UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore, demanding Priyanka Chopra to step down from her role as the UNICEF Goodwill ambassador by pointing fingers at her for being jingoistic and in support of war.

And while PC hadn’t yet come up to issue a word about it, Stephane Dujarric, a UN spokesperson came forward to say, “When UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors speak in their personal capacity, they retain the right to speak about issues that interest or concern them.” And that was that.

He also added, “Their personal views or actions do not necessarily reflect those of UNICEF” and he couldn’t have been more politically neutral yet in support of Priyanka Chopra. He further mentioned that the role of the Goodwill ambassador is “to generously volunteer their time and their public profile to promote children’s rights” which Priyanka has been doing for years now. Which, perhaps could be the reason why UN chose to nip the conflict in the bud, for they too seem to understand and respect the value of personal and patriotic sentiment.

As for our desi girl Priyanka Chopra, she continues to stand her ground as many from the industry also come forward to support her, including actress Kangana Ranaut and actor Ayushmann Khurrana.
