Priyanka Chopra Is Being Accused Of Selective Activism And So Twitter Made A Thread Comparing Her Outfits To Trashcans

The outrage that erupted when George Floyd was brutally murdered in the streets shook people all around the world. The Black Lives Matter protests that started in the USA quickly spread to major cities around the world like London, Seoul, Tokyo, even Hong Kong. In fact, a lot of Indians as well expressed their solidarity and took part in the Blackout Tuesday protest on social media. These widespread protests are the reason that the USA is seeing actual change when it comes to racial bias for the first in so many years. This tells us that unity can go a long way. But then, there are those who sit behind a screen just looking for reasons to be sour.

Allow me to explain. As you might know, a lot of our celebrities have shown their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and taken to social media to share posts that express their grief. And to me, it seems normal that they would want to talk about about a crime that has shaken the whole world. Does that make them support local causes any lesser? Nope. But correct me if I am wrong because a lot of people ( *cough* Kangana Ranaut *cough*) seem to think that our celebrities only support causes that aren’t Indian.

Anyway, the latest celebrity who has come into the scanner for “selective activism” is Priyanka Chopra Jonas. No surprises there. Just a few days after violent protests had erupted all over America, Priyanka took to Instagram to share a post expressing her solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. For some reason, this didn’t sit well with desi netizens who accused her of ignoring a lot of issues in our country but supporting the BLM movemeny.

Another thing that she is being accused of is being hypocritical. People are asking how she can support the Black Lives Matter movement after she has done advertisements that promote fairness creams. However, this is yet another ignorant argument since, in an interview in 2015, Priyanka said that she regretted doing those and will never do a fairness cream ad again.

Now, we all know how unforgiving netizens can be but this time they pushed it a little too far. A twitter user started a thread comparing all of PeeCee’s outfits with trashcans. Yes, if you keep the context of the matter aside, it’s a little funny.

Desi Twitter has had a lot of laughs on this thread and thrown around vile accusations. What Priyanka did was in no way or measure selective outrage. She supports Indian causes just as much as supports causes anywhere else in the world.

Also, before accusing her of something so stupid I think people need to see how much good she does in the world through her role as a UN Goodwill Ambassador. Just because she lives in the public eye doesn’t mean everything she does should be subject to scrutiny.

Calling her out for something like selective outrage for putting up a post in support of the BLM and to express her grief over something as tragic as George Floyd’s murder just seems completely baseless and redundant.

We need to stop being so insensitive about who is sensitive about what.
