Congressman Adhir Chowdhury Calls President Droupadi Murmu ‘Rashtrapatni’, Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman Demand Apology

Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury’s latest comments on the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, have upset many ministers. In a video that has gone viral, Adhir Chowdhury has addressed Droupadiji as Rashtrapatni and this has not sat well with Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman and many other women BJP leaders. His comments came amid the ED questioning Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case. He was asked about the Congress’ plans to march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and to this Adhir Chowdhury responded by saying that they will go to the Rashtrapati. He, then, immediately corrected himself and said that Droupadiji is the Rashtrapatni.

As per reports, Smriti Irani slammed Chowdhury and the Congress and said that he knew that addressing the president this way would not only demean her constitutional post but also the ‘rich tribal legacy’ that she represents. Irani also went on to add that the Congressman knew that by demeaning the President, he is also demeaning the ‘potential of women’ in India. She went on to attack the opposition party and said that Congress has been ‘anti-tribal, anti-Dalit and anti-women’.

Not just this, Smriti Irani had also asked Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha to apologise. She said that Gandhi had ‘sanctioned’ the humiliation of a woman who holds the highest constitutional post in the country. Nirmala Sitharaman also has demanded an apology from Adhir Chowdhury for his comments. It has been reported that Adhir Chowdhury said that he did not call Droupadi Murmu the Rashtrapatni deliberately and that he said it by mistake.

There has been a huge uproar in the Lok Sabha over this as well. Reports state that when Sonia Gandhi went to talk to the BJP members who were shouting slogans, Smriti Irani intervened. To this, the Congress President responded by saying, “Don’t talk to me.”
