Politician Chiranjit Chakraborty Says Women Should Be Conscious Of Their Surrounding While Dressing.

Recently, the newly appointed Uttrakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. It all started when he reportedly passed comments about how women should refrain from wearing ripped jeans. Apparently, a woman’s bare knees send the wrong message to society. Following right in his path, today we have another politician who thinks he knows more about what women should and shouldn’t wear than women themselves. While talking to a few reporters, actor-turned-TMC MLA Chiranjit Chakraborty said that women should be conscious of their surroundings while dressing. Seriously?! Doesn’t he think we know that much? Does he want to personally come to our houses and lay our clothes out for us? Or maybe just buy us all burqas? That would at least save him from making these inane comments.

Actor-turned-TMC MLA Chiranjit Chakraborty found himself in a precarious situation after he passed some extremely sexist comments about women’s clothing. He said that women should be conscious of their surroundings while dressing. He claims that this remark is not a “dikat” or a mandate but merely a suggestion. What is the sick obsession Indian politicians have with women and what we wear? Can’t they just leave it to us to pick our own clothing and instead focus on “suggesting” to the perverted men out there to keep it in their pants?

According to reports, Chiranjit Chakraborty made these comments while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party meeting in the Barasat constituency in West Bengal. He is currently seeking re-election in the North 24 Parganas district. He told the reporters, “I am not issuing any dress code, but only offering my suggestion as you (reporters) have asked. One (a woman) should wear a dress keeping in mind the occasion. A woman should wear different outfits for a funeral and a discotheque. What she should wear while travelling on a crowded train may differ from her attire at a party. Everyone knows that everyone is aware of that.”

Why does this man think we need a suggestion like this one, to begin with? Does he think we are so dimwitted that we don’t know what to wear when and hence need a politician, to tell us? He should explain things to men. Tell them that no matter what a woman is wearing, staring or inappropriately touching her without consent is wrong. But I don’t see him do that. Instead, here we have another man telling us what we should and shouldn’t wear. Why aren’t we surprised?

This isn’t even the first time he has made a statement as sexist as this one. In 2012, while visiting Barasat police station Chiranjit Chakraborty came under the scanner for saying that women should be conscious of what they wear. He said that as all dresses are not appropriate for everywhere and sometimes can look provocative. At the time, he was visiting the police station to enquire about the progress of an eve-teasing incident. What an irony!

We’re sick of men telling us what we can wear and can’t wear. Chiranjit Chakraborty has no right to even suggest that we should be mindful of how we’re dressing. You know if politicians focused less on what we’re wearing and where we’re going and more on actually doing their jobs, India would actually make some progress.
