Odisha Policewoman Suspended For Making A Pregnant Woman Walk 3 Kms In Scorching Heat

The world is a cruel place, and as a woman, it’s worse. With danger lurking at every nook and corner for us women, we see our worst nightmares come true every day. And while it is expected to be attacked, and exploited (yes, we expect it now), what is not expected is to be tortured at the hands of those who are meant to protect us. Police officers for instance. Recently, news of a policewoman who has been suspended for making a pregnant woman walk for 3 kms in scorching heat has emerged.

The officer in question is Sarat police station in-charge Reena Baxala, who despite being a woman herself, didn’t consider the delicate situation of a pregnant woman before putting her and her husband in an unacceptable position. The couple was stopped at a police barricade for not wearing a helmet while riding on a scooter.

As per police reports, Bikram Baruli was riding a motorcycle with his wife, who was eight months’ pregnant when Baxala stopped him and fined him for not wearing a helmet. Slapping a fine of Rs. 500 on the couple, despite Baruli’s request to pay the penalty online, the policewoman forced him to walk with the motorcycle to the Sarat police station and deposit the money.

The wife had to then walk in the sun for 3 kms to find the whereabouts of her husband. Gurubari, the woman shared, “The police officer (Reena Baxala) stopped us and asked for my helmet. Though we produced all the documents including license, registration certificate etc before the cops, they penalised us. As we did not have cash, my husband agreed for online payment but the cops forced us to pay offline. Later, when they were taking my husband to the police station, I requested Madam (Baxala) to take me along but she refused. Then I decided to walk up to the police station.”

Not only was the policewoman Reena Baxala being unreasonable in her demands, but was also rather cruel and indifferent towards the health of the pregnant woman. The woman, further to this developed complications because of walking in such heat, which is when the couple decided to file a complaint against Reena.

As of now, policewoman Reena Baxala has been suspended by the district Superintendent of police on charges of gross misconduct and dereliction of duty. This was put in immediate effect on 28 March after the couple filed a complaint against Reena for torturing a pregnant woman.
