Who Is Nupur Sharma, The BJP Leader Whose Controversial Remarks On Prophet Muhammad Had Her Suspended?
Controversies erupting on news debate shows are becoming increasingly common these days. Nupur Sharma, a BJP spokesperson, was involved in a recent controversy that turned violent. The BJP leader made some unwelcome and unwarranted remarks about Prophet Muhammad during an ongoing news debate. The statements were obviously not well received, and there were reports of violence in the aftermath of her remarks. Nupur Sharma issued an apology in public, but she was immediately suspended by BJP for her controversial remarks on national television. It is sad to see someone with such impressive educational and political credentials, but then again, we’re not surprised. Politicians have a major foot-in-mouth problem.

Who is Nupur Sharma?
Nupur Sharma was born in New Delhi on April 23, 1985. She finished her education at Delhi Public School. She pursued B.A. Economics (Hons) from Hindi College, Delhi. Nupur further attained a Law degree from the Faculty of Law, New Delhi, and then pursued an LLM from the London School of Economics.
Nupur Sharma’s political career
Nupur was a Delhi University student who was actively involved in politics. She was chosen as the President of the Delhi University Students Union on the ticket of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Nupur was also a member of the National Executive Committee of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Youth Wing and a member of the State Executive Committee, New Delhi. In 2015, the BJP appointed her as the party’s spokesperson and later the same year she was given a ticket for the Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections. Nupur stood against Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal, however, she failed to gain the winning votes.
Nupur Sharma Controversy
Nupur on a national media debate show went on to make some unwanted statements about Prophet Muhammad. In her apology statement, Nupur mentioned that her statements came as a retaliation to the demeaning remarks being made on a god in which she has faith. On the other hand, BJP immediately released a statement to clarify that they do not support Nupur’s statements and see every religion as equal, the party on grounds of her remarks immediately suspended her. Nupur’s insensitive comments also created communal violence in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh as per news reports.

Debates leading to such controversies should be avoided, also politicians should refrain from making any statements that can disturb the communal harmony of a society. Being a good orator is literally a requisite for being a good politician. How can they botch such a crucial part of their job? There are many issues in the country that needs to be discussed and debated, its high time we focus on them instead of the same old religious debates.
