Not Nearly Enough, But A Few Bollywood Celebrities Are Speaking Up Against The CAA. Priyanka Chopra Just Voiced Her Concern

India is raging and not silently at the moment. The Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) provoked the sentiments of the masses because it discriminates against certain sections of our society and we are not okay with that. People who are anti-CAA believe it legalises discrimination and establishes Muslims as second-class citizens in India. And what do citizens do when their government passes a law they detest? We protest because India promised to be a democratic and secular country. Yet, the way things are going, our nation seems far from being any of those things. The Jamia assault left us even more infuriated because that kind of police brutality is disgusting on so many levels. There are civilised protests being organised all over the country and some of them have met with a lot of violence from the police. But we are not going to let them shut us up and several Bollywood actors are using their influence to take a stand against this issue. Recently, Priyanka Chopra put forward a very powerful message on Twitter and I respect her for that.

Condemning violence like all of us, Priyanka tweeted, “Education for every child is our dream. Education is what empowered them to think independently. We have raised them to have a voice. In a thriving democracy, to raise one’s voice peacefully and be met with violence is wrong. Every voice counts and each voice will work towards changing India. #HaveVoiceWillRaise #HaveVoiceMustRaise.”

I love how she communicates so aptly and points out things that really make sense; we’ve seen that in her statements as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador too. We need more people like her who aren’t afraid to take a stand. In fact, she makes sure she takes a stand and communicate about issues that matter.

Shabana Azmi too tweeted in support of the anti-CAA protests and said she couldn’t be physically present for the protests since she is not in the country. She also insisted everyone to speak up, but without violence.

Several Bollywood celebrities have spoken in support of the anti-CAA protests. Vicky Kaushal took to Twitter to condemn whatever is happening, “What is happening is not okay. The way it’s happening is not okay. People have every right to peacefully voice their opinion. This violence and disruption is both saddening and concerning as a fellow citizen. In no circumstance, must our faith in democracy be shaken.”

Rajkummar Rao too condemned the violent attacks on the anti-CAA protestors. “I strongly condemn the violence that the police have shown in dealing with the students. In a democracy the citizens have the right to peacefully protest. I also condemn any kind of act of destruction of the public properties. Violence is not the solution for anything!” Rao said.

Parineeti Chopra pointed out how our lawmakers are being un-democratic, “If this is what’s gonna happen every time a citizen expresses their view, forget #CAB, we should pass a bill and not call our country a democracy anymore! Beating up innocent human beings for speaking their mind? BARBARIC.”
