No Female Bollywood Celebrity Showed Up For A CAA Discussion And It Shows How Little The Women Of Bollywood Care

I’ve said this before and I will say this again, especially in light of the recent and political turbulence, that inaction is also taking an action. Probably the worst kind, but an action of choice none the less. At a point in time, when the country’s people are all conflicted over the introduction of the Citizenship Amendment Act, so much that the country is figuratively and literally, up in flames, every opportunity that we as aware and learned citizens are passing up to talk about it, is a disgrace. As it is with the Bollywood industry, that despite of being in the know of everything, is constantly turning a blind eye to it.

Quite recently, in an attempt to instil some order to the chaos that the country is in right now, the government made an effort to share their side of the story with a few groups of people, who they thought could be used to disseminate clarity and knowledge over the working of CAA. Starting with the tinseltown, a bunch of Bollywood actors, actresses and big shots were sent invitations to attend a meeting with the Union Minister of Railway and Commerce, Piyush Goyal to discuss the matter about CAA at hand.

An invitation that was extended to many from actors to filmmakers to producers, was only accepted and attended by a handful from the lot, most of whom were men. And there is where the problem came into the picture. Attended by people like the Censor Board Chief Prasoon Joshi, filmmakers Rahul Rawail and Kunal Kohli, music director Anu Malik, producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Bhushan Kumar, director Abhishek Kapoor, actors Ranvir Shorey and Shailesh Lodha, singers Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod and Shaan, this one needed people to show up. The meeting that literally saw no female celebrity turn up, in all honesty, spoke volumes about how little they cared.

At one end, this movement against the CAA has emerged as the place for women to come to the fore as warriors, stories of places like Shaheen Baug emerging. And on the other hand, we have celebrities, more female than male, cushioned up comfortably  wilfully refusing to address the elephant in the room And if this isn’t their politics showing, then we don’t know what is. And even though ‘hypocrites’ comes close to defining them, considering how many claim to further feminism and make use of women power, that in time of need no one showed up, is also reflective of how hollow their words are.

In the rumored 20 personalities that did show up, actors and celebrities like Swara Bhaskar and filmmakers Anubhav Sinha and Anurag Kashyap weren’t invited altogether, for they have been the select few taking an active stand in the process. And while we understand that there is a chance that Bollywood’s non-attendance was an act of showing their dissent to the implementation of CAA, it wouldn’t have hurt anyone to get informed on the matter.

If anything, it could have helped be the bridge between authorities and protesters to find a middle ground, with all the information laid out on table and discussed openly. But clearly, the industry was of an indifferent and callous view, for it never even made an effort to contribute where the country needs them the most. Protestors however, in large groups were seen rallying out in the front of the five-star where the meeting was held, reminding the celebs that they’re watching.
