Be it when it comes to career or child-rearing, society tends to have very different expectations of men and women.  Women are usually expected to prioritise marrying and having a family over supporting their ambitions and dreams. And I’ve somehow noticed that the more successful the husband is, the more the wife is expected to support his goals over her own. Meghan Markle opened up about feeling like having ambition is a bad thing when she was dating her husband, Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, spoke about being made to feel as though having ambition as a woman is a bad thing. In a podcast titled The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams, Meghan spoke about having ambition as a woman. She said that she never felt any negative connotation to ambition. However, this lasted until she started dating Prince Harry. She said that she was made to feel as though, “ambition is a terrible, terrible thing. For women.”She added that after feeling the negativity surrounding it was hard to let go of it. She then talked about “the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller, so much smaller on a regular basis.”

2018 saw the spectacular royal wedding of Meghan and Prince Harry. A year later, they welcomed their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
