Mardaani 2’s Trailer Is The Most Disturbing Yet Hard-Hitting Thing You’ll See Today. And You Must.
I often tell all my friends that I have a faint heart. When it comes to watching horror movies or reading about incidents that are too cruel and violent to even process, I will try and not watch it. After all, what is more horrendous than learning about an inhuman act of crime committed by someone amongst us? But as much as I have tried to stay away from content that riles me up, it has found its way to me. Be it with my own horrible experiences of being a woman in a country like India or by way of my profession that requires me to write about crimes that shake my entire belief in humanity, I do not have an escape. Having a faint heart when you’re a woman is not an option anymore, and Rani Mukherjee’s upcoming movie Mardaani 2‘s trailer is a reminder of just that.
The 2-and-a-half minute trailer starts with the reporting of a brutal rape case of a girl in the city of Kota, who was tortured, raped and then killed. This is a trailer that doesn’t ease you into it. From the word go, we are hitting the violent notes and as a woman, this could be unnerving. Moving on to the gruesome details of the case with imagery and narration that continues to make you uncomfortable, the trailer shows how Rani Mukherjee’s character Shivani Shivaji Roy, makes it the mission of her life to track down and drag the fucking monster behind the serial rapes to justice. And honestly, if it were in your power you’d find yourself jumping into your screens to help her do just that.

The gripping and disturbing ,Mardaani 2 trailer has left me in a rather disoriented state of mind, yet again putting us face-to-face with the harsh reality of the country and somehow giving us the kind of adrenaline push we need to fight harder for justice. The trailer also puts some harrowing facts forward – 2000 women are raped every year by boys under the age of 18, and these only the cases that are registered. Which means that several cases are not reported and if they are, the people are not brought to justice, which brings us to a very upsetting realisation that we have been failing the women in our country.

I too, like most privileged women in this country, had spent most part of my life feigning indifference to such cruelties. But it was only a matter of time before I realised that there is no woman that is privileged enough to never find herself in a situation in which she is not violated. And that is exactly why we need movies like Mardaani 2, that force us to think, acknowledge and hopefully act in the direction of change.
Every day that we spend in silence is a day we are allowing monsters like them to wrong another innocent life and it’s about time we stop. It’s time we act like our own Shivani Shivaji Roy and remind those fuckers that there is no way they can escape the law anymore. The trailer that ends with a cat and mouse chase of Rani trying to nab the serial rapist, doesn’t just come as a hope to all women but also as a warning signal to all men out there who even dare to think of laying a finger on a woman without her consent.

The movie whose teaser was released during Navratri, subtly invoking the feeling of the victory of good over evil across India, is set to release the movie on December 13.
