Malaika Arora Disapproves Opening Of Liquor Shops. Seriously, Why Are Liquor Shops Essential?

Right next to where I have been patiently going everyday to collect my groceries in this time, is a theka or a liquor shop that has been shut for almost two months now, ever since the lockdown had been declared. And even though tine and again, I too have had days where I wished it would open just for a few minutes till I could get my hands on a few bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon that would tide me through this quarantine, I am really okay that I can’t get my hands on it. Today, I walked past an anxious and desperate crowd, one where social distancing wasn’t being followed. Never did I imagine that when the time would come to slowly get back to normalcy after this lockdown, the government would start by reopening liquor shops first. A move, that has been questioned by quite a few – including me – and a couple of Bollywood celebrities too.

As we enter into lockdown 3.0, this time around, the nationwide lockdown would see a few relaxations, provided proper instructions were followed and liquor shops surprisingly made the cut and we wonder why. Considering, India is a country with a huge population, majority of which enjoys drinking, more so at a time when we’ve been kept apart from it for so long, the streets are now filled with people, desperately standing to stock up on some liquor, social distancing be damned.

A notion, that didn’t sit right with a lot of Bollywood A-listers as well, including Malaika Arora Khan, who showed her dissent on Instagram recently. On her Instagram story she wrote, “I still don’t get what was the need or desperation or necessity to open liquor shops!! Bad bad idea. Only gonna create more chaos, domestic abuse, child abuse.” And we couldn’t agree with her more.

Backing up on this was the famous lyricist Javed Akhtar who wrote, “Opening liquor shops during the lockdown will only bring disastrous results. In any case according to all the surveys nowadays domestic Violence has increased to a large extent. Liquor will make these days even more dangerous for women and children,” while veteran actress Raveena Tandon wrote with sass, “Yaaay for paan/gutka shops! Excellent, the spitting starts again! Wonderful!!”.

With reports about domestic violence having increased in this lockdown, for women, children and other victims now find themselves locked up with their assaulter, to have opened liquor shops was nothing less than arming the perpetrators with enough ammunition to go in for the attack. And although, we understand how liquor cannot be blamed for this vile behaviour entirely, but let’s face it, in a situation like this works catalyst for destruction.

Coming from someone who herself enjoys a drink or two, people need to understand that they need to enjoy their safety more in these times, for there will be plenty of time to get drunk later on. We need to prioritise what is more important here, and according to the bunch of us and other Bollywood celebrities, the government needs to reconsider opening liquor shops, for alcohol is far from essential at the moment and would only lead to chaos!
