Madhuri Kanitkar Smashes Glass Ceilings, Becomes The Third Woman To Hold A Lieutenant General Position In Indian Army. She’s Such An Inspiration

In my experience, there is nothing like an inspirational piece of news to get you going on a Monday morning and take care of those blues. And while in midst of the political chaos and the disconcerting crime stories, it’s hard to come across news that actually makes you happy but it looks like we are off to a good start this week.  We have gotten our hands on just the perfect headline to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. This after we found out how Madhuri Kanitkar became the third woman to hold a Lieutenant General rank in the Indian Army. She didn’t just break glass ceilings, she absolutely smashed them.

Major Madhuri Kanitkar, after having proudly served in the Indian Army for an impressive 37 years, has recently been promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, making her the third woman officer in the Indian Army and the first woman paediatrician in the army to achieve the second-highest post in the force. Having worked as the the former dean of Armed Forces Medical College Pune, Kanitkar has now been posted to Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff under the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and we couldn’t be more proud, for she’s the kind of inspiration we need.

In fact, this achievement hasn’t just made her one of the first few to hold an important lieutenant position in the army, but also made her and her husband, the kind of a power couple that is hard to beat. With her husband, Rajiv who is also at a Lieutenant General position, the Kanitkar couple has now become the first husband and wife duo to in the armed forces to achieve the rank. Talk about setting couple goals, this one has seemingly outdone all others in one fell swoop!

The first woman to hold a lieutenant position was Punita Arora who was a surgeon vice-admiral and a former 3-star flag officer of the Indian Navy and the Indian Army. The second one was Padmavathy Bandopadhyay, first from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and now followed by Madhuri who will be posted in the CDS.

The CDS works to ensure there is ‘optimum utilisation of allocated budget, ushering in more synergy in procurement, training and operations of the services through joint planning and integration. It further shall include mandates that would facilitate indigenisation of weapons and equipment to the maximum extent possible while formulating an overall defence acquisition plan for the three services.’  said Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Bipin Rawat when asked about the military reforms that are in the pipeline.

.Giving the rest of us hope, that hard work always pays off and inspiration to never shy down from gunning for what you want, Madhuri has come through like a ray of hope we the women of today need to keep going  and the spark we need to pursue our passions in fields that are often dictated by men.

Way to go Madhuri!
