You will agree that you feel a lot safer when you sit in a rickshaw driven by a woman, don’t you? Now, if you must regularly be commuting by bus, you must have noticed that all bus drivers are men. The conductors even. But that is soon about to change as Mumbai’s BEST bus has gotten its first woman driver!
Laxmi Jadhav Is BEST Bus’ First Woman Driver
Laxmi Jadhav, who is a 41-year-old, Mulund resident has broken the glass ceiling and how! She has been given the distinction to become the first female driver of buses in Mumbai. Wet lease operator Mateshwari Urban Transport Solutions Pvt (MUTSP) has hired Laxmi for the job. They run around 400 buses on behalf of BEST.
As per a report by The Times Of India, Lokesh Chandra, BEST general manager has said that this is a historic occasion for a woman to drive a BEST bus. He also informed that three women have been selected as drivers but Laxmi will be the first one to drive the bus. The newly recruited women are all undergoing intensive training. MUTSP’s Rishi Tak has said that they, too, want to do their bit in empowering women by recruiting them.

Laxmi Jadhav has shared her past experience and said that she was the first woman to get a permit to drive an auto in 2016. While she was working with a travel agency, she learned to drive cars like BMW and Mercedes.
