Kalki Koechlin Took Time To Become Friends With Her Ex-Husband After The Split. So You Can Be Friends With Your Exes

I like to believe I am the kind of a person who would never harbour bad blood for anyone. Not even the ones who have hurt me. Some might, and in fact do, call me a little too accommodating, but for me it is the peace of mind that trumps any other emotion. Which is probably why, when it comes to being and staying friends with my exes, I am all for it. Now, with that I don’t mean that I’m best friends with them, but I do have a cordial relationship with them and no matter how much people tell me it’s impossible, I beg to differ. And so does the Gully Boy actress Kalki Koechlin who recently opened up about her equation with her ex-husband Anurag Kashyap.

On the famous radio show, What Women Want with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kalki Koechlin touched base about a lot of things in her life and career, but one that jumped out at us, and we could relate to personally with, was her take on whether or not one can stay friends with their exes. Talking about her own ex, Kalki said, “It just sort of happened organically. It took time. We did take a lot of time apart in the beginning. But ultimately, I think we have respect for each other’s work. You can still love a person and not be able to live with them, and I think we were both able to recognise that.”

And we did see what she meant by that. These things don’t happen overnight. Just how you don’t fall in love over a night, you don’t fall out of love instantly either. Break ups, especially after marriage are tough. It is bound to take a toll on you emotionally and mentally. To have one person by your side one second, and not have anyone the next. Which is perhaps why many estranged couples decide to stay in touch even after parting ways.

And the fact that she recognises it takes time to come to a point when you’re no longer bothered by it, is advice that could come handy to all of us. Because the last thing you want is to rush into the act of being friends and end up getting attached all over again, which becomes a definite recipe for disaster.

Kalki further continued saying, “Also, it’s so much about timing, right? I feel sometimes, you are both just on very different time zones. Like, maybe I was very young and he was much older, and the timing just wasn’t correct. We wanted different things at that point. I think that makes a big difference.” And it has. After all, love more than anything in this world is dynamic and timing is the only thing that holds it together most of the times.

We’re, however, impressed by how maturely the two have managed to handle their split up, having realised that sometimes even if you can’t be with someone, you can always be there for them and that makes all the difference. Anurag Kashyap, who has a daughter of his own, even congratulated Kalki with the warmest regards when the news about her being pregnant with her boyfriend Guy Hershberg came around, and honestly it felt nice to see, that friendships after break ups aren’t as impossible as people make them out to be.

Kalki proved to us how things don’t always have to go awry, and that there is always a better and a more mature way to handle situations.
