Ingrid Escamilla, A Mexican Woman Was Murdered And Skinned By Her Partner. The Women Of The Country Have Taken To The Streets In Protest

At some point or another, every woman faces the brunt of being a female. I once met someone who was super snide towards me just because I was a girl and it really pissed me off, obviously. But there are more extreme forms of gender bias. The most extreme of them being femicide, the act of murdering someone just because they were born with two X chromosomes. I know how redundant it sounds, but there a lot of whack jobs around the world that would murder a woman just because she is a woman.

The reason I am talking about femicides is that a Mexican woman has just become its latest victim and her story is nothing short of horrifying. What happened to her is bone-chilling and it adds onto the ongoing string of violent crimes that are occurring against women in Mexico.

The mutilated body of Ingrid Escamilla, a 25-year-old woman was recently discovered in her home. She had been skinned and some of her organs were also missing. She was stabbed to death by her 46-year-old man partner. He was also arrested at the crime scene and was reportedly covered in bloodstains.

Ingrid’s partner has apparently confessed to having stabbed her. He said that they had a heated argument where she threatened to kill him. He skinned her in order to remove any and all evidence.

This case really makes me shudder. I don’t think I have ever heard of such a gruesome murder. This story is definitely not for the weak-hearted. The worst part? Local tabloids and digital websites published very graphic pictures of Ingrid’s mutilated body on their front page. One of the newspapers, Pasala, headlined the pictures, “It was Cupid’s fault.”

This sparked a major outrage against the publications and the Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his anger towards the media houses who printed and posted pictures of the body. He has also assured that there will be strict action taken against those who leaked the pictures.

In protest of this and to show their solidarity with Ingrid, Mexicans are flooding Twitter with “beautiful pictures” as a way to counter the gruesome photos. Their aim is to “honour her memory and her life.” One woman tweeted that now when someone searches Ingrid’s name, they will find images that honour her and her family. Such a beautiful gesture, check out a few of them:

Mexico is struggling with the reputation of being an unsafe city for women for a while now but violence against women has drastically increased in recent times. Activists say that the number of women killed because their gender is skyrocketing at the moment. 1006 cases of femicide were reported in 2019.

And that’s an appalling large number. But with Ingrid’s murder, a lot of women have taken to the streets to protest against the growing instances of violence against women and perhaps that’s the movement that was needed.
