In UP, A Rape Accused’s Family Threw Acid On The Survivor To Intimidate Her Into Taking Her Complaint Back. We’re Failing Our Women Every Day!

Back in the day, when I was a kid and still rather impressionable, one thing that my parents most spent their time on was instilling a sense of right and wrong in me. Telling apart good from bad, ethical from unethical, moral from immoral and making sure I grow a conscience strong enough to always steer me in the right direction. From talking to me calmly to sometimes grounding me till I learn my lesson, and I can’t thank them enough for raising me right in this world of messed up perspectives. But what happens when the ones bringing you up and raising you are themselves in the wrong? A question we never really needed an answer to but have none the less have now been made witness to, as we hear about how a rape accused’s family threw acid on a 16-year-old survivor in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur on Sunday.

In what seemed like an act of spite and with the purpose of intimidating the girl and her family into withdrawing their complaint, the rape-accused’s family didn’t think twice before getting into a brawl with the survivor’s family on Sunday and subsequently throwing acid on the teenagers leg in an attempt to hurt and intimidate her. Armed with lathis and firearms, the relatives of the girl confirmed that they had been being pressurised and threatened by the accused’s family into taking back the complaint and when the girl consistently refused, they resorted to means that spoke of their monstrosity and cowardice all at once.

A case that was filed against two guys – Muneer and Dilshad in June 2019, ended in court giving a clean chit to Muneer but arresting and accusing Dilshad of raping a minor. While he is still serving the sentence, his family was out there, silently marinating in what they seemed a ‘injustice’ against them, because why blame your son, right?  At a time when you’d expect the family to disown a son or a brother like him who ravaged a girl and her body mindlessly, we had his family acting as if they had a bone to pick. They made matters worse by throwing acid on the little girl’s feet, saying the next time it would be her face. It is appalling.

And perhaps this is the reality we live in today, where the perpetrators don’t feel consumed with guilt or remorse because there will always be someone or the other making attempts to protect them. Be it their family, their friends, or the inadequacy of our legal and justice system. The accused will always find a loop hole, exploit it and absolve themselves of all responsibility and guilt, while the victims continue to bear the brunt of it.

In this context, when you think about Nirbhaya’s case has been dragging in court and with the various pleas being filed, it makes you worry about the fate of her family members. This is going to be scary. It convinces us more that justice needs to be swift.

This culture that still victim shames and has extended itself to provide more benefits to the perpetrators than the survivor doesn’t just need to change, it needs to done away with completely. The fact that such instances are happening even after people shouting off of rooftops about how wrong it is, is proof that we’ve failed our women.

The girl along with the injured family members have been taken to the hospital and are currently undergoing medical treatment. The police is still investigating the matter and we hope, it gets them to witness what kind of monsters we have on the lose, that need to be put behind bars and made an example out of, that you can not get away with such acts of violence and hate crimes anymore. Or so we hope.
