In UP, A Mother And Daughter Ended Their Lives Because An Obscene Video Of Them Was On The Internet
For decades now, women have been conditioned into thinking that their dignity, their morals, their family’s honour all lies between their legs. Often condemning those women who get molested or raped, by terming them damaged goods instead of victims of abuse, women are gravely judged on whether or not they have been able to protect themselves. Which is why, when the misfortune befalls on anyone, their instinct is not to stand up for it, but feel ashamed and blame one’s self. Something what must have happened, when a mother and daughter were found hanging in UP, dying by suicide after an obscene video of them got leaked.
A tragedy that took place in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, body of a mother and her daughter was found hanging by a tree outside their house in Nagrasen village on Wednesday. Turns out, the reason the two decided to take their own lives was because an obscene video of them had found its way to the internet, and it went viral, causing the duo to hang themselves.
As per the police reports, the daughter had gotten married in December to a man, but one of her former friends identified as Satyam, continued to harass her after her marriage. On the night of 22nd March, Satyam went to the extent of sending an obscene video of himself and the daughter to the daughter’s husband before putting it out on the internet.

Gonda SP, Shailesh Pandey shared, “The accused was blackmailing the woman by saying he would tell the husband about their former relationship. He also misbehaved with her and forced her to make an obscene video. Thereafter, he started blackmailing her with the video, asking her to live with him. When the woman refused, he sent the video clip to her husband.”
He further stated, “This affected her relationship with her husband and the woman and her mother were devastated. They did not come out of the house for two days and were found hanging on Wednesday.”
And while Satyam has been arrested under charges of abetment to suicide and the SC/ST Act for now, it doesn’t change the fact that him feeling entitled enough to get his way through blackmail caused two women to lose their lives. Not to forget, the kind of trauma the mother and daughter must have gone through, to be convinced that the society would look at them in a certain way, forcing them to choose to end their lives instead of fighting it.
It is a disgrace that our society doesn’t offer enough support to the victims of abuse, and for that, we have lost two more lives.
