In UP, A 17-Year-Old Boy Killed His Sister Because He Didn’t Like Who She Was Dating. WTF?

Coming from a rather chill and progressive family, one that believes in the “to each his own” philosophy, I’ve rarely had trouble with my parents while growing up. It can make you falsely believe that these choices are available to everyone. Yes, I am checking my privilege as I write this. I know that for the most part, I could reason with my folks. Except, when it came to matters of the heart, it was then that I had to field a bunch of questions (more like an interrogation). My parents are, understandably, protective of who I get involved with, and often take their sweet time to approve of anyone I even became close friends with. And while this level of protective parenting is still called for, what is not is a family member (the brother in this case) going to the extremes of executing you for your love life.

A case that has taken place in the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh where a 17-year-old boy allegedly murdered his 15-year-old sister because he did not like who she was dating. This news story has sent chills down our spine for the kind of monstrosity a brother could subject his own sister to.

The police has reported that the now-deceased girl used to have a relationship with a boy her brother did not approve of. Despite repeatedly asking her to cut ties with the boy, the girl continued with her relationship with him, and considering how her brother shouldn’t get to make these decisions on her behalf, we understood where she was coming from.

However, things took an ugly turn on Tuesday when an argument broke out between the girl and her brother over her relationship with the guy. The brother, high on patriarchy and being snubbed by his sister no less, summoned her to the rear end of the house. There, the two got arguing once again, until the point where the brother picked up an axe and killed her with it.

The boy, who has surrendered to the police, will be presented before the juvenile justice board today (March 24), for he is a juvenile. Meanwhile, the police has sent the body of the victim  to a hospital for post-mortem examination, suggesting that a case at the Kamalganj police station will soon be filed.

The real tragedy here, besides the innocent girl losing her life, is the systematic and orthodox conditioning of the society, that preaches how women must constantly abide by their family’s rules has ruined yet another family. The fact that the accused minor felt entitled to demand her sister to cut ties with a boy she liked reeks of entitlement.
