In Gujarat, A Man Stabbed A 16-Year-Old Girl 32 Times For Rejecting His Marriage Proposal

I keep saying that this is a good time to be a woman. I keep wanting to believe that. But every time we take two steps forward, the patriarchy pushes us back ten steps. Of course, no one can deny that progress is underway but if I am being honest, a sloth moves at a faster pace. The one thing that needs the most attention right now is women’s safety. Every day, women are getting raped, murdered, attacked with acid and we are sick of watching the men accused of these crimes just walk away scot-free. Did you know that one of the most common reasons behind such gruesome crimes is a man’s bruised and battered ego? And no one is doing anything to safeguard the women from these butthurt men who don’t know how to handle rejection in a healthy manner. Just recently, a man in Gujarat stabbed a woman not once or twice but 32 times for rejecting his advances. Why is the male ego so fragile?

On 17 March, in Gujarat, a 16-year-old girl was stabbed 32 times by a 23-year-old man after she rejected his marriage proposal. The accused, identified as Jayesh Sarvaiya, has been arrested by the police. This brutal incident took place when the victim, who is in the 12th grade, was with her brother at their home in Jetalsar village of Jetpur taluka of Gujarat’s Rajkot. For how long will women have to bear the brunt of a man’s inability to take no for an answer?

After the victim rejected his marriage proposal, Jayesh dragged her out of her house and stabbed her 32 times. The victim’s brother, who tried to save her, was also stabbed by him 4-5 times. The girl’s father has demanded immediate justice.

Even local politicians have gotten involved. According to reports, BJP state president CR Patil on Monday met the family members of the victim and assured them that the government is all set to punish the accused. Even the Congress working president Hardik Patel and NCP leader Reshma Patel met the girl’s family. They’ve raised questions about the law and order of the state. But hey, this isn’t about politics, is it? It’s about the 16-year-old girl who was murdered in a monstrous manner right outside her house. Let me reiterate. She was stabbed 32 times. Let that sink in. Men need to know how to simply walk away if a woman rejects a proposal. Raping her, murdering her, throwing acid at her to ruin her life is never the answer.

If these politicians really want to help, they need to sincerely work on women’s safety and changing the prevalent mindset that is controlled by the patriarchy.
