In Delhi, No One Came To Help This Woman Who Chased Down And Thrashed The Man Who Groped Her

Every time I walk down the street at night, I am terrified. All the worst-case scenarios just flash before my eyes and I wonder if I am equipped enough to handle them. I think of all the things in my possession I could use as a weapon against my assailant. A pen or my heels or my keys. Here’s the thing though when you are faced with a situation where you are forced to defend yourself, most of us freeze for the first few minutes. By then, the assailant has already done the damage and fled. We’ve all got something to learn from this Noida girl who chased her assailant down and thrashed him in public. Now, that’s how it’s done!

This 24-year-old woman, various reports are calling her Veera, chased a man down in broad daylight and thrashed him after he allegedly groped her in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida. This incident occurred on Friday when the woman was on her way to work. She’s an employee at a petrol pump in Noida. The way she handled herself and taught that man a lesson is actually inspirational.

Veera was walking to work when she noticed a man riding a bicycle. He was halting at different points and staring at her. When she reached a red light, he came close to her and touched her inappropriately in front of dozens of passers-by. After he groped her, he tried to zoom off but she wasn’t going to let him go. She told TOI, “I saw a car approaching in my direction. I tried to reach a safe spot but the cyclist came from behind, groped me and tried to escape. I was shocked but I ran after behind him.”

She began chasing him. Once she caught him, she started slapping him in front of all the onlookers. People gathered around to watch the show but shamefully, no one came forward to help her. Some even started filming the incident. Veera said, “I have been staying here for the past six years but this was the first time when I felt unsafe. People think that they can do such things and get away with it. Even though he said sorry later, such an act is totally unacceptable.”

I don’t know what’s worse. The fact that this man thought he could grope a woman in broad daylight and get away with it or that while she was thrashing him for his perverted behaviour, not one person came forward to help her. It’s ridiculous and we should be very ashamed. Of course, the woman proved that she can hold her own but does that doesn’t change the fact that people chose to film the incident instead of actually helping her out. And people wonder why women don’t feel safe in our country.

We should be seriously ashamed.
