IMF Chief Christine Lagarde Calls Out PM Modi For Not Doing Enough For The Women Of India

By  |

We simply haven’t done enough to stop rapes. And most women have cried themselves hoarse about this, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. The powers that be don’t think this is an issue that needs addressing. And so, we continue to show support on social media, participate in candle light marches, and do everything we can as citizens to show our anger, hoping it will make a difference, mostly knowing it won’t.

But it is shameful. A matter of concern when India’s PM is called out on a global platform for not doing enough for women’s safety. Recently, IMF Chief, Christine Lagarde, called out Narendra Modi for not mentioning the women of India enough in his speech, and “it’s not just a question of talking about them”.

“I was hoping he would have said a bit more. Wish he had talked a bit about girls and Indian women,” she told NDTV. That nudge was grounded in economics as well. She believes economies do better when their women do better.

Talking about the Kathua rape, she said the crime was ‘revolting’!

“I would hope that the Indian authorities, starting with Prime Minister Modi pay more attention because it is needed for the women of India,” she said.

We hope so too.
