Advocate Satish Maneshinde Blames Patriarchy For Why Crimes Against Women Are Underreported. He Isn’t Wrong!

Crimes against women are exceedingly increasing in India. To discuss this and related issues, IMC Ladies Wing organized an event on Crime Against Women- Instant Remedial Actions, on Wednesday. The event was attended by Advocate Satish Maneshinde and Mumbai Police Chief Sanjay Pandey. The event highlights certain areas of concern on why crimes are increasing against women through the input of people from the judiciary and police.

Satish Maneshinde rightly pointed out that just laws to protect the rights of women are not really the solution, efforts should be made towards making it more approachable for women. He further elaborated saying it should be ensured that women have enough confidence to come to court and enforce their rights.

The Mumbai Police Chief was asked a question on what women should do if police stations refuse to file FIR saying it did not fall under their jurisdiction. To which Sanjay Pandey replied that the police must register the case and then transfer it to the right jurisdiction. He further asserted that at no cost should crime against women be tolerated, according to The Times Of India.

The President of the IMC Ladies Wing, Nishreen Khorakiwala, and Chief of the Law Committee Rajyalakshmi Rao who was present at the event raised the questions on crimes against women.

Advocate Satish Maneshinde also put forth his opinion which can rather be considered one of the main issues why justice lags in terms of crimes against women. He said that the laws in our country are such that it requires the women victims to report the crime at a police station. He highlighted the fact that many women still hesitate to report crimes because of various issues like patriarchy and perceiving women as a weaker section of society. Therefore many crimes do not get reported at all.

The event was indeed insightful in terms of the discussions that took place. However, mere discussions will not solve the real issues being faced by a woman, efforts should be made to fight them on the ground.
