‘Hautesteppers 3.0’ Ep 7: Mayanti Langer Says More Women In Sports Broadcasting Has Made It A Safe Space

While sexism within a lot of industries is still present and it is still a problem. However, slowly and gradually, we are shifting toward a society which presents both men and women with equal opportunities. Having said that, complete equality seems like a distant dream but women are fighting to achieve that. One of the biggest, misconceptions that people have is that women are disinterested or don’t understand sports. However, in our recent Hautesteppers 3.0 episode, sports journalist Mayanti Langer has spoken about being a woman in the industry and she has hinted at a gradual change.

Mayanti Langer spoke about being a woman in an industry as male-dominated as that of a sports journalist. She said that when she first joined the industry, she was the only woman there. However, she said that after being in the industry for 16 years, there are so many more women around her in sports broadcast, not just in front of the camera but also behind the cameras. Langer added that she feels that this has created a safe space for women saying that the perception that women don’t understand sports has been dismantled.

Langer says that she tries to remove gender from this equation saying that even if she is a woman, she is aware of her skill sets ad what she brings to the table and she has the capability of doing her job well. She said that if she wanted the same pay, opportunity and screen time as her male colleagues, she had to be able to handle the same pressure and responsibilities as they could which made her realise that it was time for “no excuses”.

It is genuinely good to see that a woman not only made it in such a male-dominated industry and was able to prove her mettle against them. And what’s more, is that women like Mayanti Langer has managed to pave the way for other women to also be a part of these industries.
