Harvey Weinstein Sentenced To 23 Years In Jail For Third Degree Rape Charges. This Is A Giant Win For The #MeToo Movement

Out of the many stories that I had been following with great interest, or in this case, great hope that of the Harvey Weinstein trial has been one of the most important ones. One of the first names to roll out in the #MeToo movement, with over 80 women coming to the fore to accuse the movie mogul of sexual assault, rape and more, Harvey Weinstein had been undergoing an intense trial, being tried for charges of rape. The key witnesses Jessica Mann, Miriam Haley took to the stand, laying it all out revealing the shocking, brazen and gruesome details of the horror he inflicted upon the them.

Two weeks ago, the court finally convicted the man of third degree rape charges and yesterday the man turned monster was sentenced to 23 years in prison. This is a landmark judgement for all women who have been fighting their own #MeToo battle. A great boost to the women gathering courage to stand up against the powerful men in the society who have time and again misused their position to exploit women. This judgement has come by as a ray of hope, showing us that justice shall always prevail when you fight for it.

Harvey didn’t take the judgement too well and decided not to go gently into the night. Taking the stand minutes before his conviction, Harvey Weinstein delivered what many are calling a speech, but only qualifies as a rant, where he says things that most definitely did not work in his favour. In an attempt to grasp at straws, Weinstein started his speech by saying, “We are going through this crisis right now in our country. I was the first example, and now there are many men who have been accused of abuse, something I think none of us understood.”

He then continued saying things like, “Everybody is on some kind of blacklist. I think possibly men like myself, like Dalton Trumbo — they said they were Communists, and now there’s a scare, just like that now.” We’ve no idea what he’s trying to say, he’s honestly speaking Greek at this point but we understand that perhaps he was trying to acquit himself by playing the victim card and said that he may have behaved badly but has also supported the cause for women several times. Yes, because tokenism is what we want in lieu of someone forcing themselves upon us.

In fact, even as Harvey Weinstein made his speech (!?!), his lawyers tried to interrupt him twice, asking him to stop, however, alien to the concept ever listening, he continued and said, “I wasn’t about power, I was about making great movies. Other people cared less about movies and more about their children, families and friends.”

And then, for his final words, he concluded by regarding the ‘friendship’ he still has for his accusers, Mann and Mimi and said, “I’m not going to say these aren’t great people. I had wonderful times with these people, you know. It is just I’m totally confused and I think men are confused about all of these issues.”

But the thing is Harvey, and it isn’t rocket science, when you’re confused, you ask, you don’t rape. And perhaps that is why, when you imply you’d have confused rape for god knows what, we find it incredibly hard to believe. An emotion that more or less took over Lauren Young, another accuser, who too shook her head in disbelief as Weinstein delivered his rubbish speech. However, we are happy about the man finally being served justice for his awful transgressions and  giving the first true triumph of the #MeToo movement.
