Greta Thunberg Lends Her Support To The Protest Against Holding The JEE and NEET Exams During This Pandemic.

Every few days I give into my curiosity and fear and check how many coronavirus cases India has. At this very moment, we have nearly 31 lakh 70 thousand cases. Yep, we are stuck in a very dark hole right now with absolutely no way up in sight. The worst part is that people have stopped caring that there is a pandemic and have started living their normal lives. Understandably, people are now anxious to get back to the land of the living but I don’t think a lot of them understand, even now, the gravity of the situation we are facing.

One of the best examples of people dismissing the pandemic is the fact that despite hundreds of people protesting, the engineering and medical entrance exams- JEE and NEET are not being postponed. These exams are to be conducted in the month of September.

For months, students across the country have been clamouring on social media against holding these exams during these times. A little over 24 lakh students will be appearing for these entrance exams. I don’t need to give you another reason why these exams must be postponed.

Recently, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea of postponing these exams, stating that the National Testing Agency has taken all precautionary measures. The SC said, “Career of students cannot be put under jeopardy for long.”

It is understandable that postponing means these students lose a year in their academics but I am pretty sure that is better than making yourself vulnerable to a deadly virus.

This protest has garnered so much traction on Twitter that earlier today, famed climate activist Greta Thunberg lent her support to the campaign. She took to Twitter to say that it is “deeply unfair” that the students have to appear for these exams during a pandemic.

Greta said, “It’s deeply unfair that students of India are asked to sit for national exams during the Covid-19 pandemic and while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods. I stand with their call to #PostponeJEE_NEETinCOVID.”

You know a movement is important when someone like Greta Thunberg tweets to extend support for it. She is right, however, it is not right that lakhs of students be exposed to the virus in such a way. Especially now when the cases in India are rising constantly and where the flattening of the curve is a distant dream. They need to postpone to a time when everything has calmed down at least a little.

Greta lending her support to the postponement of the JEE and NEET exams has been trending on Twitter all day. And now, maybe the National Testing Agency will see just how dangerous this is.

Just before Greta tweeted, the CM of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik wrote to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” against holding the exams. He wrote, “It would be unsafe for students to visit test centres physically amid #COVID19 for JEE [Main] and NEET tests. Therefore, it is requested that exams scheduled to be held in September may be postponed to a later date.”

We need to keep in mind that we are sitting in the number three spot of the world’s worst-hit countries. Does a gathering of 24 lakh students sound like a good idea?
