DY Chadrachud Blames Patriarchy, Infrastructure For Less Women Judges In India. We Need Some Strong Actions

Very rarely do I come across people in power who actually understand the root causes of the problems in our country. Because if we are aware of that then only can we work on it. Now, talking about the drawback, we know that many professional fields, which were once considered to be male-dominated fields, now are progressing in terms of women’s representation. But we still have to achieve a lot here. And one such concerning field is the judiciary. Sadly, the women judges in our country have been a handful only, and the new Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud not only accepts that but has also given some clarity on why this is still the reality in India
DY Chandrachud recently took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of our country. He is also known for giving some remarkable and progressive statements in favour of women’s rights and justice. On November 12, Saturday, DY Chandrachud marked his presence at the 20th edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. In his speech, the honourable justice also gave some concrete reasons why there is still a lack of women’s representation in the position of judges. The key points from his statements were that the bar responsible for the entry of judges and lawyers in the judiciary is dominated by men, and is still patriarchal. Another important point that he highlighted was the poor infrastructure of the courts. He brought to light that there are many courts that do not have proper toilets for women. As per the report, he stated this issue to be a major cause of why women’s representation in the judiciary is still considerably low.

DY Chandrachud, however, by giving examples of his female counterparts, also praised their ability to bring fresh perspectives to any case. He noted that this gender naturally adds something to the decision-making, as per the news.

Well, we are glad that our new Chief Justice is well aware of the main problems, which are necessary to solve any issue. However, if such problems evidently exist, what work has been done to solve them? Even after such extensive awareness and campaigns on making toilets, why is there a lack of it in a place like a court? While we appreciate DY Chandrachud’s acknowledgment of the difference women makes in this field, we would also hope to see some progressive changes happening.
