Did You Know The Real Name Of Our New President Was Not “Droupadi”?

On July 21, Droupadi Murmu was announced as the 15th President of India, as she won with an overwhelming number of votes against her opponent Yashwant Sinha. Now, our ex-President Ram Nath Kovind’s term has officially ended as the Madam President took her official oath on July 25. She is now our second woman and first tribal president, and it is such a proud moment for all of us. Well, reportedly our President, Droupadi Murmu has disclosed a very interesting fact about herself. She has revealed that her original name was not “Droupadi”.

The news about Droupadi Murmu becoming our President was collectively celebrated by the country, and the official oath ceremony has also taken place. Madam President has revealed in a recent interview that her real name was not “ Droupadi” but “Puti”. Further shedding some light on the same, Droupadi Murmu said that her name “Droupadi” was given to her by a school teacher however she did not belong to the same district of Mayurbhanj. She went on to share some information about how the names are kept in her community. As per the report, she said that in her tribal culture, “names do not die”, instead if it is a girl, they take their grandmother’s name and the boys take their grandfather’s. However, she added that her name was changed to “Droupadi” for “good” as per the report. In addition to this, Madam President also said that her name was changed several times, from “Durpadi”, to “Dorpdi” and so on.

Madam President also went on to talk about her surname in the interview given to an Odia Video magazine. She said that her initial surname was “Tudu” but after getting married she changed it to “Murmu”
