Doctors In Germany Are Posing Naked To Protest Against The Shortages In PPE. We Think They Need To Be Heard.
Imagine a war scene where the people are are charging at each other in full speed, with a plan and everything and one of them suddenly finds itself crippled due to lack of ammunition. To cut their losses, the party falls back, there’s no way to move ahead without causing harm to the people involved. Now, imagine that scenario is taking place in Germany, and except for soldiers on both sides, we have doctors on one and the deadly coronavirus on the other. And, the doctors are on a backfoot due to the lack of PPE shortages. And instead of just asking for it, German doctors have chosen to go in for a unique protest.
PPE or Protective Clothing and Equipment is to be provided to the doctors and all the medical staff fighting off the virus on the frontlines. You would think that this would be easily accessible to those directly in contact with the infected. However, doctors in Germany aren’t nearly getting enough of these and the lack of it is limiting them to fully attending to their patients. In fact, the situation has gotten so much worse, that the medical professionals found themselves revolting against the shortages, by going naked.
Calling their protest Blanke Bedenken or Naked Qualms, Ruben Bernau, a GP in the group shared how, “The nudity is a symbol of how vulnerable we are without protection.” Posing in no clothes, hiding behind medical equipment, toilet rolls, they say their actions have been inspired from a French doctor, Alain Colombié who was also photographed naked, describing himself as ‘cannon fodder’ in this battle against coronavirus.

Another GP, Jana Husemann who is also protesting against this shortage of PPE said, “Of course we want to continue treating patients who still need to receive a close examination.” But also shared how for that she requires proper equipment. Questioning the government on how they have to sew their own masks, the issue at hand require immediate action.
And while we don’t know how effective their naked protest against their un-met demands for PPE is going to be, we think it really needs to be looked into, for this is the least we can do right now. Doctors are fighting for our lives every single day and if our only job is to ensure they have enough and the right equipment for it, we can’t fail them now!
