Democrat Maura Healy Becomes The First Openly Lesbian Governor Of Massachusetts. A Win For Representation!

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community were marginalised for a long time and history is proof of it. They were not given their basic rights, were considered a harmful impact on society and also not fairly treated. Even among them, the women who identified with this community were doubly marginalised. One – because of their gender, and two – because of their sexual orientation. But after fighting a long fight, things are changing on that front as Maura Healey, who identifies as a lesbian, has been appointed as Massachusetts governor.

As per reports, Maura Healy is Massachusetts’ first openly lesbian governor and belongs to the Democratic Party. She also is Boston state’s first woman candidate to hold this position of power. Healy won the post after leaving behind the Republican Party’s Geoff Diehl. Maura said a very sweet and quite inclusive thing in her speech. She said that she will be a governor for both who voted and did not vote for her, too.
Talking about how she scripted history with her victory, Maura addressed ‘every little girl’ and every ‘young LGBTQIA+ person’ that they can be whoever they want and whatever they want and nothing can get in their way except their imagination. Maura also expressed pride in being the first woman and the first lonely lesbian person to have been elected as Massachusetts’ governor.

Apart from Maura Healy, the Democratic Party’s Tina Kotek was also the other openly lesbian candidate in this race for the governor’s seat. As a part of her campaign, Healy ensured that she will work towards expanding job training programmes, making schools more modern and also making childcare more affordable. One of the most important parts of her campaign was her ensuring there was safe and legal access to abortion available in Massachusetts.
We are very happy with her win and wish there was more representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in politics.
