Deepika Padukone Working With #MeToo Accused Luv Ranjan Has Us And Twitter All Riled Up And Rightly So!

If there is one thing that I’ve learned, it is that almost every Indian on the block is raised with a heavy and healthy dose of Bollywood while growing up. We’ve been fed stories and characters from Bollywood that have had an influence on us and how we think, mainly it has given us fodder for responses to any situation in life. Be it Shah Rukh Khan teaching us what love means, or Madhuri’s charm and wit telling us how to embrace our womanhood, we have a lot to thank Bollywood for. And it is for having such an influence and power over us that we also hold them accountable – to stick to the things they believe in and we measure them against the expectations they set. Especially our current favourite, Deepika Padukone.

Presiding over hearts and box office collections, she’s the nation’s favourite actress right now, and if it ever comes down to it, Deepika Padukone would unanimously win the award for being perfect. Perfect in her looks, in her style, in her acting and in her persona. The actress has picked up back-to-back blockbusters, got married in a dreamy wedding to Ranveer Singh, and always stepping up to address social issues of relevance can do no wrong or so we thought. Except, quite recently, when the Padmaavat actress was spotted leaving Luv Ranjan’s office with actor Ranbir Kapoor, a we, the very loyal fan base was very upset and rightfully so.

For the uninitiated, Luv Ranjan, the director that has given us movies like Pyaar ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu ki sweety, had come up as an accused in the #MeToo movement and was criticised by several for preying on young actresses. So naturally, when Deepika was seen leaving his office, that may or may not have been about an upcoming movie that she’d do with the director, netizens took to Twitter to voice out how their Deepika would never do something like that. Soon after, the hashtag #NotmyDeepika started trending on Twitter, where people were speculating less and hoping more for her not to take up a movie with the man who has been accused of being a perpetrator. 

And we do too hope that the actress chooses what is right over what may be a smart monetary movie- it may cost her both – her loyal fan base and her integrity. After all, the actress who is picking up projects about an acid attack survivor and raising issues such as gender-based crimes, can’t at the same time, be indulging in working with the very same perpetrators we seek to bring to justice. Choosing to work with someone who must otherwise be shunned by the industry is not just about them but also about how you want to further and contribute to the cause that has plagued the industry for decades. And it isn’t the first time that the netizens have dismissed other actors for working alongside those accused. The entire cast of De de pyaar de was trolled heavily for working with Alok Nath, because it is such indifference that costs movements like #MeToo these setbacks.

These expectations have also not risen out of thin air because, it was Deepika Padukone who had earlier taken a strong stand against working with another accused Vikas Bahl, and no wonder people expect the actress to stick to her words and not disappoint. What the purpose of the visit was, is still unknown, but we do pray that it is not what is being anticipated.
