Dear Bollywood, Let Me Tell You Why Your ‘All Lives Matter’ Hashtag Is Tone Deaf And Makes You Look Bad

Dear Bollywood, Let Me Tell You Why Your ‘All Lives Matter’ Hashtag Is Tone Deaf And Makes You Look Bad

One thing that I often remind myself while working  is that while I can do a lot of research and all of that but still, I may not know everything about a topic I am to report or discuss. With everything going around in the world, and trust me a lot is, it is impossible to keep a track of every issue that is being brought to the fore let alone forming your politics over it. And so, every time that I have to pick up a story that seems to go deeper than just a trending hashtag on Instagram and Twitter, I indulge in what is called research, which, thanks to google, is reduced to a simple type and search protocol. A concept that seems to have been lost on a lot of Bollywood celebrities, for they often skip the part of being informed, but are quick to hop on to the bandwagon, lest it go away without them having added their pointless two cents to it.

As has also been done by the Kedarnath actress Sara Ali Khan, who with one post has proved that at the end of the day, talking about a trend is all that matters to celebrities, as opposed to being in the know. We say this after the Love Aaj Kal actress was found making an elementary mistake of supporting a cause, all the while not knowing what it really stands for. And for the uninitiated ones, we are speaking of the #BlackLivesMatter uproar.

After a man named George Floyd was brutally and publicly murdered by a cop, for, well being of a much darker colour than them, the entire world has witnessed a surge of people who are ready to stand in support of him and raise their voice against this extra-judicial and racial killing. And while most of us understood the gravity of the crime that was witnessed by everyone on the video that went viral, some of us also wanted to remind the others of issues that are closer to home and demand equal attention. Except, what flew past the heads of celebrities here was that there is always a right way to even protest, which clearly they do not know.

This was apparent with a post and a hashtag that came from a lot of celebrities, including Sara Ali Khan, where they were promoted their message using the hashtag #AllLivesMatter, not realising how much they’re taking away from the cause at hand. And to spell it out for them, because they seem to have missed the bus, allow us to clarify it one more time that the slogan #BlackLivesMatter, in no way also implies that other lives do not.

Netizens who were quick to dismiss Sara Ali Khan’s lack of knowledge about this topic slammed the actress among others for it, which ultimately led her to take down the story altogether.

Feeling as though we’re back to square one, considering this is the same world where people often mistake feminism for misandry and believe supporting women instantly translates into hating men, we yet again have this common misconception going around where people who are writing about how much all lives matter, do not understand how them saying it refutes the entire movement which was for a specific cause and that is racial discrimination.

By hijacking a movement about racial prejudice by saying, but what about other lives? is the exact whataboutery we need to stop.

In fact, it wasn’t just Sara Ali Khan who put all her education and degrees to waste here by missing out on the simple and implicit translation of a movement, but also other actors like Tamannaah Bhatia also held up the tone-deaf title that netizens gave to the Bollywood celebrities for not having enough read enough on the matter to know the difference.

Guess, all that superficiality is bound to rub in on them, but to think that they would step in to post stories, just for the sake of being in the trend is not just disheartening but also disappointing. We expected more from you, Bollywood.
