In A Viral Video, This Bride Documented Her Gender Equal Wedding With Kuwardaan And Twitter Does Not Say Tathastu!

I don’t mean to offend anyone but let’s be honest, a lot of our customs and traditions are regressive and stem from a place of sexism and misogyny. I feel like a lot of our wedding rituals such as the mangalsutra, kanyadan, mang bharna etc have been criticized for the regressive ideologies behind them. Hence a lot of feminist brides are trying to change the gears of tradition and make their wedding a more equality friendly one. A video of one such bride has gone viral where she documents her gender-equal wedding ceremony by eliminating a few of the rituals and having her husband do some of them too. However, Twitter hasn’t looked kindly on this bride as many have quote tweeted the video and mocked her for being “woke”.

In a viral video, a bride has documented her gender-equal wedding ceremony. She said that she removed the mangalsutra from the ceremony. However, the sindoor is mandatory in a Hindu wedding. So the way she countered this was by putting sindoor on her husband as well. They did the same with the kanyadan by doing a “kunwardaan”. Kanyadan is a ceremony where the bride’s father gives his daughter’s hand into the groom’s hand to signify that she is his responsibility from henceforth. The way this bride’s wedding worked was that the groom’s parents would give him away to her as well. She talked about how her to be husband was not very happy with this idea.

Now I am not want to go to such measures mainly because I do not want a big wedding, I personally would prefer a simple court marriage. However, I feel it is kind of unnecessary to be offended and pressed over how someone chooses to be married. These rituals and traditions hold significance in our culture but they do come from a place of sexism and a time when women were considered men’s properties. And if we have spent centuries following them why can’t the gears go the other way round every once in a while?
