Come On Neena Gupta, Your Regressive Views Are Not Helping Anything

We love a strong woman. And someone like Neena Gupta embodies all the things we love about such women. She’s an unapologetic single mother, a powerhouse performer and a force to reckon with in the industry. But it wasn’t always like this, as she recently revealed in an interview, reports news agency IANS. She had her fair share of struggles.

In an interactive session with actor Rajit Kapur, Neena Gupta said, “The society has not changed even today, and that is why I tell aspiring actresses especially — do not be very candid at your professional space. I had a child out of wedlock and that proved me as a strong-headed woman, which I am. But back then, a strong woman could only play a vamp. So I ended up playing mostly negative roles. ”

And while we agree, it couldn’t have been easy to be stuck in negative roles because people had little imagination, what she went ahead to say has us up in arms. Her advice is, ” Girls, if you want to smoke, do not smoke in public or do not be physically friendly to a male friend. These are perceived as signs of independent women, and that might [mean you get] offered a certain type of role only.”

This is where we disagree. Actresses like Taapsee, Kangana and others are establishing themselves as actresses of merit that can carry a film on their shoulders. And to have someone as distinguished as Neena Gupta to air such regressive views isn’t really warranted.

Feminism just got a jab in the stomach and we aren’t here for it.
