Girls Should Be Given Equal Rights In Property Like Sons, Says Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma

We heard countless vague statements about women made by Indian ministers making the headlines. Remember one Chief Minister’s “Girls should not wear ripped jeans” statement? That was one of the most ridiculous statements ever made. However, for a change, this news may serve as reassurance that India still has some hope and that there are people in higher positions who think carefully before making public statements. Also, the statement that is making headlines is significant because it pertains to women’s property rights. In Indian society, it is still given less weight. So, more attention to this issue from influential figures is highly needed. This statement has been made by the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, who was attending a press conference on Wednesday.

Himanta Biswa Sharma made a statement about women’s equal rights to property. In the conference, the chief minister advocated saying that daughters have an equal right to property like the sons of the family. He further asserted that they should be given an equal share, and also added that 50% of the property should be given to the wife, as per news reports. We agree!

The CM then moved on to suggest that Muslim men should not marry three women, and instead of giving ‘talaq’, a proper legal divorce procedure should be followed. To back up his statement the CM said that the government and the common Muslim are of the same opinion.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa also shed some light on the issue of discrimination faced by Northeast students. He said that there has been a reduction in such cases and also credited PM Narendra Modi for the progress.
