Aspiring Actress Left Brain Damaged After Having Pretzel And Getting The Wrong Treatment

Here’s the thing. I hate going to the doctor. I know that’s a horrible thing to say in the midst of a pandemic but it’s true. I am terrified of needles and I detest that one typical smell that’s present in all clinics and hospitals. More than anything though, I am afraid of getting the wrong treatment for something. It’s a very common mistake that has happened to me before. As a child, I was treated for the wrong disease and that put me in the hospital for a whole month. And it’s not just me, I have heard numerous horror stories from people who have been through such traumas. Most recently, an aspiring actress was left brain damaged after medical professionals negligently treated her allergic reaction. She was generously compensated by does money really make up for something like this?

After being treated negligibly for a severe allergic reaction in Las Vegas in 2013, aspiring actor Chantel Giacalone’s was awarded $29.5 million (roughly Rs 220 cr). According to reports, she had gone into anaphylactic shock after biting into a pretzel infused with peanut butter. Chante’s lawyer, Christian Morris, said that she had lost oxygen to her brain for a few minutes after being treated by the MedicWest Ambulance. I am no medical expert but even I know that treating allergic reactions are the basics.

In a lawsuit, Morris argued that the medics aboard the MedicWest Ambulance, which was running the medic station that day, deployed intramuscular epinephrine since they didn’t have IV epinephrine, an adrenaline treatment for severe allergic reactions. But those are required for full anaphylaxis. The lawsuit was seeking more than $60 million in damages for medical expenses and emotional suffering. Considering Chantel was left with brain damage because of the faulty treatment, it’s justified.

Obviously, MedicWest denied any wrongdoing. They argued that the outcome was inevitable considering Chantel’s severe peanut allergy. But at the end of the day, they lost the lawsuit and a jury awarded Chantel’s family a compensation of $29.5 million. Upon hearing the verdict, Chantel’s father said, “At least my daughter will be taken care of. I’m happy about that. All the anguish that we’ve been through for the last eight years, I’m not happy about. I just hope MedicWest changes their ways.”

This is just scary.
