Who Was Anna Mani, A Pioneering Indian Scientist Who Got Google Doodle Tribute On Her 104th Birth Anniversary?

You know, whenever I feel like giving up on my dreams, I take a look at all the inspiring women who have achieved the unachievable and it gives me a lot of courage. Well, if we are talking about inspiring women, then we have to mention Anna Mani, a pioneering Indian scientist, physicist, and meteorologist who changed the way our country gauges weather. Google is celebrating her 104th birth anniversary by dedicating a special google doodle to her. If you want to know more about this inspiring personality, then keep on reading. 

Who Was Anna Mani? 

Anna Modayil Mani was born on August 23, 1918, in a Syrian Christian family in Travancore. She was a physicist and a meteorologist. Her significant contributions in the field of meteorology made it possible for our country to make accurate weather predictions. Anna Mani was an avid reader from childhood, she wanted to pursue medicine but she changed her mind. Later, she decided to study physics, and enrolled in the honours programme at the Presidency College, Madras. Mani started her research career under the supervision of C.V. Raman at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

Anna Mani returned to India in the year 1948 and joined the India Meteorological Department, Pune. She simplified and standardised the drawings of nearly 100 weather-related instruments for production and set up monitoring stations across the country to monitor solar radiations. 

In 1960, Mani started her work on measuring atmospheric ozone and then later set up a meteorological observatory at the Thumba rocket launching facility. Her contributions and research to weather forecasting made it possible for India to make accurate weather forecasts. She retired as Deputy Director General of the Meteorological Department in the year 1976 and returned as a visiting professor to the Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru. 

Anna Mani suffered a stroke in the year 1996. She passed away in August 2001, in Thiruvananthapuram.

Anna Mani, a pioneering woman scientist and ‘Weather woman of India’, is an inspiration for all.
