Ananya Panday Said She Wouldn’t Do A Film She Doesn’t Believe In. She Says That After Doing SOTY 2 And Pati Patni Aur Woh.

I really like my colleagues; in fact, we are all friends at this point. So what do friends do? They get into trouble together, and this time it was because we decided to watch Pati Patni Aur Woh. Now, don’t get me wrong – I didn’t walk in with high expectations and yet, I was disappointed. The film talks about adultery and it’s cool that they tried to make a movie with a purpose. But if somebody were to ask me what the moral of the story was, I’d say it’s to never underestimate a bad film for it can be worse than you’d imagined. Don’t expect this to be a mini-review of the film; that’s not what I am getting into. The reason I was forced to relive the horror of this apocalyptic piece of celluloid is what Ananya Panday recently said about choosing her films.

In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Ananya said, “Personally, I am not drawn to misogynistic, sexist or gender-biased movie. Since as an audience I would not want to watch a film like that, so I would not want to choose a film like that either.”

I really appreciate actresses who make sure they don’t participate in movies that are sexist, but then Pati Patni Aur Woh gently sits on the top of that category of films. The wife is shown dressed in kurtis and sarees while the girlfriend is shown as hot and walking around in western outfits. Vedika’s (Bhumi Pednekar) life revolves around teaching in a school, packing lunch for her husband and cleaning his soiled undergarments. Tapasya (Ananya Panday) is an enterprising woman (or so they intended to show)who parties and looks perfect at all times. Could you be any more stereotypical? Add to it wife jokes and that’s really what a sexist movie looks like.

Ananya Panday further added, “I would rather sit at home and do nothing than picking something which I don’t believe in completely. I have time because I have started out young, so I don’t need to rush and finish things. You have to be in love with the films that you make because it’s such a long journey, so I don’t want to do anything half-heartedly.” That’s really cool but wasn’t her first movie Student of the Year 2? The movie which was all about hyper-privileged youngsters and drama that didn’t entertain. Please tell me that’s not what you believe in. I know, as a career move, it was great for her because she got a great launch, commercially speaking. But really, you don’t cite SOTY 2 as a movie you “believe in”.

So while her thought is really good, I’d like to see that followed by actions. Ananya Panday seems to have calibre and right now, it’s just hidden under two very mindless films. Or so I hope.
