Coping mechanisms can differ!

During the lockdown, do you remember the long queues in front of the wine shops? Well, it was covered by all the news channels as well. The Pandemic undoubtedly was a stressful phase for all of us. There were not many things to do and people had to find ways to make the lockdown bearable. And alcohol was one of those many ways to deal with it, and the surge in alcohol intake was especially noted among women. A recent survey revealed that since the Pandemic, a rise was witnessed in the consumption of alcohol among women, particularly in Delhi. The survey brought to light many other aspects of it to understand this situation even better.

The survey was carried out by an NGO called Community For Drunken Driving. There were approximately 5000 women on whom the survey was conducted. Out of which, 37% of the women agreed that their alcohol consumption did increase since the Pandemic. One main reason behind this highlighted by 47% of the respondents, was stress. In fact. The NGO too shed some light on the reasons for it, one was that there was an increase in the availability of alcohol, and then there were also changes in the expenditure of the public, which became major contributing factors to this increase in consumption among women, as per the reports.

The Pandemic was a time when people were staying at their home, and most Indian women were burdened with the responsibilities of their families even more, which I believe was a major reason behind the stress. However, excessive alcohol consumption can be harmful to health, and therefore, the results of the survey are quite alarming. The fact that women had to find their ways out with the use of alcohol is distressing too.
