It is so because of tremendous influence it has over the people of the nation at this point in time. From what to wear to where to eat, to how to love, we owe much of our learning to the movies we’ve grown up watching. Which is why, we think there couldn’t have been a better and more superb time for the industry to be minting out movies as Sheer Qorma which is director Faraz Arif Ansari’s upcoming movie about the LGBTQ+ community.

It’s been close to a year since Article 377 was decriminalised and same-sex love stories in India have flourished. However, we are no where close to achieving in reality, what we have done on paper. Especially with all the hatred and prejudice that the LGBTQ+ community faces on the daily, even now. But we are of that belief and that is about to change. Bollywood has finally descended into its woke self and is actively producing movies with hard hitting content that the public can actually chew on. Be it Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, or Fawad Khan’s Kapoor and Sons, Bollywood is slowly yet steadily moving towards more risque and real cinema.

As has been the case with Faraz Arif’s next, Sheer Qorma. A story that means to address the many challenges faced by the LGBT community. Divya Dutta and Swara Bhaskar have already been signed on as lead protagonists, two women who are known for their bold and brazen status in the industry. And now, in recent developments, we have found out that there is yet another stellar star on the cast – Shabana Azmi, who will be seen playing the role of Divya’s mother.
The veteran actress, who has always done justice to her roles and delivered critically acclaimed performances confirmed the news by saying, “I was moved by the script which was recommended to me by Divya. After that, I met Faraz who came across as sincere, honest and deeply committed to the story. The bonus is working with Divya and Swara, so we figured out the dates and I said ‘yes’ to the project. We had the first workshop last week and everything came together organically. I am looking forward to the shoot.”

Safe to say, we too are desperately looking forward to this movie’s release, for now is the time when people need to be made privy to the other side of the story. The fact that Faraz himself is a strongly-opinionated director and belongs to the queer community, can mean that this will be a movie that really explores this space instead of giving us a glossed over, superficial idea of it. It would be interesting to see these three powerful and extremely talented actresses deliver on a script that is more than just a movie, it is a social conflict that needs to be resolved.
