A Russian Woman LGBTQ Activist Was Put Under House Arrest On Charges Of Distributing Porn For Posting Pictures Of Vaginas. What Even?

That women are, in general, a cause of distress to society is a well known and an established fact. From everything we do, or not do, everything we say or don’t, it becomes a small battle to even exist and hold your head high. That’s thr truth unfortunately. Be it by nurturing stereotypes that exploit women, to perpetrating age old myths or shutting them down whenever they try to get past this oppression, the world is threatened by everything a woman does. This Russian activist who recently was sentenced to a house arrest for posting pictures of vaginas to create awareness and undo the taboos around it, is a sound example of it.

Yulia Tsvetkova, a Russian LGBTQ activist who was putting up posts of vaginas on her social media page, “Vagina Monologues” in an attempt to lift the taboos surrounding the female body, was put under house arrest for it. She was charged with distributing porn which is illegal in Russia. So is speaking up about the female anatomy, it seems.

Put on a rather unfair house arrest and awaiting trial, since November of last year, the 26-year-old shared how many people are of the belief that she herself was responsible for getting detained with such a “shameful charge”. Yulia shared how, “It gives me confirmation that yes, my case is politically motivated,” she also went ahead to mention that she thinks that the authorities are using the charges of pornography only as a pretext against the activists, especially the ones from the LGBTQ community for they are easy targets. A move that may sound like just wild speculation but makes a lot of sense.

Russia is as orthodox and staunch as it gets, and though it has decriminalised homosexuality in 1993, as a country especially with the people in power, they have not fully grasped the reality of the situation.

A similar charge was used against a woman named Michelle who was sentenced upto 3 years over posts of drawings allegedly showing naked minors – that would be incorrect, for children should not be sexualised.  For Yulia however, this would be the third kind of a charge against her, the first two being rather minor ones for “propaganda” of gay values to minors. Clearly Russia isn’t ready for a more inclusive and progressive approach towards something as natural as homosexuality or even female genitalia, for it has come to the point where activists and women being dealt with harshly for even talking about it!
