A Female Reporter Was On The Receiving End Of Jim Carrey’s Sleaziness. Women Journalists Have Been Getting Harassed For Years And Nobody Is Talking About It.

Yesterday I came across this video of Jim Carrey that is doing the rounds on social media and receiving a whole lot of flak. In the video, he is being interviewed by Charlotte Long, a senior entertainment reporter with Heat Magazine. They are talking about his upcoming movie, Sonic the Hedgehog. She asks him, “In the film, Sonic has a bucket list. I was wondering, after all you’ve done in your career and in your life, is there anything still left on your bucket list?” To that Carrey replied, “Just you, that’s it. It’s all done now.”

At first, Long seemed taken aback by the comment but she laughed it off by saying she didn’t know what to reply to that. Carrey then told her, “Just own it”. It was these inappropriate comments made by him that pissed off netizens to a whole new level. They posted tweets saying he was a “massive sleazebag” and that they wish he would apologize to Long.

The anger of the Twitterati is definitely justified; being a glorified celebrity doesn’t give you a free pass to make comments like these. It was highly cringey and frankly, a little disgusting too. Just because she is a young female journalist and is laughing at everything you say (her job demands that, unfortunately) it doesn’t give you the right to be a gigantic perv. Jim Carrey is loved for his light-hearted movies around the world and this kind of behaviour was not expected out of him.

I am not sure if you’ll have observed but this is not a standalone incident. A quick research will enlighten you on how  on-field female journalists are misbehaved with all the time by celebrities and common folk alike. This has been going on for decades and coming from the same line of work, I feel like it’s time someone spoke up against it.

Here are a few instances of where a female journalist was misbehaved with. Beware, these are creepy and how.

In 2018, Colombian news correspondent, Julieth Gonzalez Theran was reporting from the field in Moscow about the Football World Cup that was underway. About a minute into the report, some random man runs up to her kisses her and groped her breast. The professional that she is, she went on to finish the report without missing a beat but then went to slam this on her social media by saying, “We don’t deserve this treatment..we are equally valuable and professional. I share the joy of football, but we must identify the limits of affection and harassment.”

Another similar incident occurred with one of our very own journalists, Anjana Om Kashyap, now the executive editor of Aaj Tak. She was a field correspondent back in 2012. After the Nirbhaya case came to light, Anjana was on an assignment to report whether Delhi Police had upped their game. But just as her camera began rolling near Safdarjung Hospital and she began her piece-to-camera, you can see three lecherous men in a gray car drive up to her and pass some lewd comments. In the video you can clearly hear one of the men telling her, “Chale?” (Let’s go?). That’s when the cameraman intervened and they drove off after realising that the camera was rolling. This happened less than a week after Jyoti Singh aka Nirbhaya was gang-raped.

Another incident occurred in Karachi Pakistan in 2016. Saima Kanwal was reporting from outside the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) offices for K21 news channel when a police officer attempted to shut her camera down. The video shows how he misbehaved with the cameraman while Saima was telling him to stop. After a kerfuffle, the video ends with the policeman slapping her in an act of police brutality.

In another incident, in Savannah, Georgia in December 2019, Alex Bozarjian was doing her piece directly from the site where the Savannah Bridge Run was underway. Then out of nowhere a male jogger who was part of the run, gropes and slaps her butt before running off. Though clearly traumatised by this, the reporter continued to talk about the run. She then lashed out on Twitter against the man who has been identified by the Savannah Police Department and banned from all future races.

This next one that I am about to tell you’ll about is by far the worst one. In 2008, Sara Sidner a correspondent from CNN was giving a live report on the terrorist attacks from right outside the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. While she was describing the scenario, you can see a wild mob of men surround her. They seem angry at the fact that she is reporting, and she even asks one of them to talk to her on camera. While all this chaos was underway, the streetlights go out. The video goes blank, but you can hear her screaming, “Stop it”. It later came to light that while terrorists were tearing our city apart, some goons took advantage of the dark and groped, grabbed and even tore Sara’s clothes. She said that they pushed her cameraman and both of them had to fight their way out.

This next one happened in 2016 in Cologne, Germany. Esmeralda Labye was doing a live report on the week long carnival celebration when she was groped on camera. A man came out from no where and kissed, taunted and inappropriately touched Esmeralda. She then lashed on social media saying that before fleeing, he had the audacity to ask her to sleep with him.

These are just six out of, we can only assume, would be hundreds of cases around the globe. These women are all professionals, just doing their job like anyone else. But they are manhandled, groped, molested, verbally propositioned, assaulted and taunted. Why? What is it about a woman reporter that makes a man think, hey let’s slap her butt or kiss her neck? It is cringey, disgusting and it further reasserts the facts that the world is full of pervy men.

This kind of shitty behaviour needs to stop and people need to start respecting women in all professions. In fact, people need to start respecting all women!
