A Chinese Influencer Shared Instagram Versus Reality Pictures Of Herself, And The Difference Is Going To Make You Question Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Just like every other girl my age, my idea of beauty for a long time was defined by films and television. With relatives who were unaware of the concept of not sticking their noses in someone else’s business, I was constantly made to be aware and embarrassed of my darker and duskier skin tone. And if they couldn’t fault someone’s complexion, it was about their weight.

You see, I too was one of those brainwashed little girls, who were made to think that beauty could only be synonymous to being fair, lovely and slender and that I would only be desirable if I was all of that. Of course, later on with the help of my parents who instilled confidence in my abilities than my skin tone, I was quick to dismiss these notions, but for many out there, these fake beauty standards have come to control their entire life. Especially for most of the influencers who live off on maintaining an image of themselves that more often than not is just a facade.

But in a fresh turn of events, a few Chinese influencers decided to bring that image down (and quite literally), by posting the real pictures of themselves and the ones that they put up after editing. And honestly, the difference between the two was pretty telling of the pressures that society wants us to stick to.

Breaking and demystifying the myths people have about celebrities and influencers looking a certain way, a Chinese influencer by the name of Coey, released a bunch of photos drawing a shocking comparison between what is real and what is a filtered, edited version.

Using softwares that don’t just tweak your face and add make up to light it up better, but also fully transform your body type and the very way you look, these editing tools have been used to alter reality, just so that the influencers could stay relevant and live up to the unreasonable standards that have been laid out by the beauty industry. In the pictures, you can see that Coey resigned to the fact that she was never going to have that jawline and so, she just created one for herself. Her skin is cleared out, her nose made smaller, her eyes made bigger – you can barely recognise her.

And we’d be lying if we said we didn’t ever use one of those filters on our pictures as well.

From little things like softening the skin tone to adding proper six pack abs, a variety of tools are used just to look a little more acceptable, and that is the very problem we need to address here. It is about time people make peace with how they look, and more than that take pride in just how they are naturally. Because the moment you own up to your  real self and starting taking yourself seriously, it won’t be long before others follow the lead. And guess, this influencer here was taking a step just into the same direction!
