A 34-Year-Old Woman Was Beaten Up After She Asked A Couple To Not Get Intimate In Public. What’s Going On?

As much as I detest neighborhood aunties trying to stick their noses where they don’t belong, all the while over-involving and over indulging themselves in the private lives of other people, there are times when we end up making our private affairs so public and can’t really blame others for having an opinion over it. Especially during times like these, where we have to be extremely careful about how we behave. It’s been almost 8 weeks since we’ve been living on a list of do’s and don’ts by the government, following the rules of social distancing, and despite knowing the gravity of the situation, there are a few people among us who couldn’t give a damn about rules and regulations. Much like the couple that recently was charged by the police for beating a 34 year old woman.

After a 34 year old woman named Mumtaaz Kadir Shaikh filed a complaint with the police of how a couple and their relatives beat her up, upon asking the couple to not get intimate in public, we were convinced that we live in a country that’s full of people who simply won’t listen. The incident that took place on May 2, was after the complainant was returning home after distributing food to migrant workers and saw a couple getting intimate on the road in public.

“I was working with my colleague. We were distributing food to workers in our area. After their meal got over, all co-workers left and I was standing alone outside the plant,” said Mumtaaz while giving her statement. She then went on to say, “The girl stays in our area, so I walked up to them and stopped them from getting intimate in a public place. When I told her not to do it, she got angry and started abusing me.” It was after Mumtaaz started abusing back when the guy grabbed her neck and started hitting her.

Quickly joined by their relatives, the girl’s 18-year-old brother, mother and aunt who were all around came running and joined the man in beating Mumtaaz up. While it might not always be a reasonable request, during these times of social distancing when such acts are advised against. And rather than understanding the situation, the family took part in beating up a single woman, and that makes us really wonder how impulsive and aggressive people are.

She also said, “As it was dark, I could not tell where each person hit me. But as I raised an alarm for help, the locals intervened and stopped them from assaulting me,” after which she was taken to the JJ hospital for treatment. The police on the other hand has lodged a case under sections, 141 (unlawful assembly), 143 (punishment), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

Senior Inspector Gajanan Kurhade who registered the case against the family commented on the matter and said, “As we are busy with the pandemic, we just served them notices and released the accused after a few hours. At present, we are investigating and we will soon arrest them.” And we hope they do. It is time people learn to be more tolerant, civil and mindful of their own actions before pouncing on innocent civilians when they are called out.
