10 Things You’ll Relate To If You Haven’t Been Sleeping Well At Night Lately

Ever since the lockdown started, I haven’t been able to sleep well at night. Actually, I haven’t been able to sleep at night at all; I sleep in the morning, for a few hours. And sleep deprivation doesn’t stop me from staying up late the following night too. And while at it, I look at the kittens that come out to play at night, jumping and hopping around, feeling free because there aren’t people and vehicles. I really enjoy it and feel like what we are doing is precisely the same!

The night is the only time things feel normal because it’s not changed – it was always quiet. But days are filled with proof of life has turned upside down as streets that were once crowded look deserted. I walk out of my room, and there’s always news on coronavirus playing on the TV. But when it’s night, it’s beautiful and unchanged. It’s my place of familiarity where I go, to feel normal.

And this is so many of us. None of my friends have been able to sleep since the lockdown. I spoke to so many people and realised that all of us are literally doing the same things at night, feeling the same way during the day. It may suck to be in this sleepless pattern, but let’s not give ourselves more reasons to worry. Let’s just accept what it is and take a moment to see the comedy in what all of us are going through. This phase is spoiling us and we might as well just cherish it. At least we are in it together. Are you? Here are 10 things you’ll relate to if you too have been having sleepless nights since the lockdown.

1) Your parents are used to the hearing sounds from the kitchen late at night

Earlier they used to wake up worried assuming there’s either an intruder, a raccoon, or a very hungry ghost in the house. But after finding out that raccoon is you, they won’t bother even if you have an occult gathering in the kitchen!

2) Because you’re either rummaging through the refrigerator or trying to make something

The refrigerator wants you to get a life or at least stop expecting it to magically produce something yummy for the third time you visit it in two hours. That’s too much pressure.

3) You’re always tempted to play “one more” game of Ludo

It goes from just one game to best of three to best of five and then it just goes on to become a tournament. You’ve collected a wealth of gold coins, that you have absolutely no use for, but you definitely want more.

4) The most analytical discussions happen at night over a call with your bestie

One thing leads to another and before you know it, you’re analysing the reason you broke up with someone five years ago, even though after that you’ve contributed generously to your dating record. From dating patterns to pooping patterns – nothing is off the limits and shall be analysed with detailed perfection.

5) A single night feels like an eternity because that’s the time you truly have for self

Between 11 pm to 5 am, you’ve consumed three mini-meals, two bags of chips, and an entire season of a series and had time to play Ludo, have mini-concerts in the shower. You love this time of the day when it’s quiet and peaceful.

6) So you binge-watch shows and movies like it’s the weekend

Earlier, I used to struggle to complete a season, trying to sneak in some time while travelling to and fro work. But now, it seems like conquering several seasons of a series is just a matter of a few days. In fact, just out of curiosity and ample time, I revisited a few episodes of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Don’t judge me. Okay, judge me; I deserve it!

7) Except it’s not and the next day you wake up cranky

Living life on the edge? They say curiosity killed the cat. But your curiosity to know what happens next made you very very cranky. Why is it so bright, again?

8) But you can’t sleep because you have to work

It doesn’t matter whether you slept at 3 am or 6 am; you don’t have the luxury to complete eight hours of sleep. This may feel like it’s your summer vacation, but since it’s not, you just have to live a life of sleep deprivation.

9) You live on caffeine and refuse to sleep because you want to sleep early tonight

Your parents don’t speak to you before you’ve had tea or coffee. And even though, at several points in the day, you feel like just crashing, you don’t. You promise you’ll sleep early tonight. You tire yourself by exercising or cleaning around at home. You’re motivated but…
