Menstrual Cups : The Good, Bad And Ugly

Oh periods. See, you want to see the silver lining when it comes to them but it’s not that simple. Because there are very few positives to being hungry, cranky and cramp-y. I am pretty sure we are a delight to hang out with during that time. Maybe not.

Anyway, we are here to talk to you about menstrual cups. I’m sure every girl had reached out for a pad when they first got their period, and then slowly moved onto tampons because… well curiosity, then saw a menstrual cup and freaked out! Menstrual cups can look a bit intimidating, when you realise you have to insert that into your body but trust me they will be your BFF at the end of this article.

A menstrual cup is a small funnel-shaped cup made of silicone which will collect period fluid. Yes, you do have to insert it into your va-jay-jay but it is different from a tampon because it can hold a lot more fluid and and you won’t feel it at all. Or that’s the hope.

If you’re wondering how to use a menstrual cup then here is perfect tutorial for you:

No matter how intimidating they look, there are several advantages of using a menstrual cup:

  • It is affordable, so you will be saving a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. If you are wondering about the cost, then a menstrual cup is around Rs 600 to Rs 1500, you pay one time and you can use the same up for up to 10 years!
  • It hold more fluid than a tampon or a pad, so you won’t even need to change it often.
  • It can’t be felt during sex, so yay!! Neither you nor your partner can feel the cup.
  • It is safe for the environment since tampons and pads take aren’t that eco-friendly.

Well, menstrual cups can be the best things that happened to you, but there are a few disadvantages as well:

  • Using a menstrual cup can get a little messy especially when it comes to removing it. There’s a chance the bathroom looks like a crime scene.
  • For beginners, it can be tough to insert it or remove it, but once you get a hang of it you won’t even need to worry about it. Explaining why you were holed up in a bathroom for about an hour might be slightly difficult though.
  • A menstrual cup may be a little irritating to your vagina and can cause discomfort if it is not well lubricated.

With that being said, what are you thoughts girls? Use them or not?
