Hindi cinema has gifted us with some impeccable performances and actors who rose above to become stars. The impactful influence of these stars on every Bollywood fan remains a fact. From impersonating their onscreen roles to replicating their iconic sartorial choices, everything has fed this undeniable bond between stars and their audiences. And amongst the long list of celebrities who have graced the big screen, one name who has had an impact on both our hearts and closets is actress Rekha. Ever since her debut in 1970’s Sawan Bhadon, Rekha has introduced some iconic trends both on and off the screen. From courtesan costumes to edgy bob hair, the iconic star has weaved a cult fanbase. And as we celebrate the star’s 68th birthday today, let’s take a look at five of our favourite style moments of the actress, on the big screen.
Umrao Jaan
In the 1981 film–Umrao Jaan, Rekha slides into an array of scintillating courtesan costumes for her character Amiran. Curated by the film’s costume designer–Leena Daru, Rekha’s look for the film incorporated the essence of Mughal fashion, displayed through anarkalis, qawwali hats, passas and henna-decorated hands. From jewel tones, and gold to vermillion red, Rekha sparkled in these shades and brought her iconic track–“Dil Cheez Kya Hai” to life.
Pyaar Ki Jeet
For her 1987 film–Pyaar Ki Jeet, Rekha played the role of Soni, a village girl. For the rural style, Rekha donned mirror-laden cholis, matched with colourful skirts and oxidised jewellery. The actress also introduced a mix of embellished and fringe-bordered headscarves that contributed to sartorial trends in the era.
Silsila
For the role of her 1981 hit film–Silsila, Rekha’s character Chandni turned into the classic Yash Chopra heroine. From classic chiffon sarees, mixed with pearl necklaces to red bindis, Chandni’s dreamy look was curated again by celebrated costume designer–Leena Daru.
Khoon Bhari Maang
Another of Rekha’s most popular films was Khoon Bhari Maang. The actress’ portrayal of Jyoti and Aarti, gifted us with some borderline bizarre fashion trends, that are still revisited by fashion nerds. From sporting foil gold dresses, shimmer turbans and bow-tie headgears to crisp curls, Rekha’s monumental looks were peak statement-making.

“Paheli” Parineeta
Rekha ji’s special appearance in Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan starrer film–Parineeta, brought the old-school opera glamour under a different light. Dancing to the tunes of musician Sunidhi Chauhan, Rekha ji’s netted saree in cherry red was styled using half opera gloves and a matching red rose, pinned to the side. For the 2005 release, the look was an interesting mixture of cabaret costume and Bollywood’s version of theatrical glamour.
