Priyanka Chopra Makes Some Valid Points On Diet Sabya’s Debate Around Tacky NRI Fashion
Conversations around Indian fashion, as seen through the lens of Americans, have made some valid points about cultural appropriation, and appreciation. From labelling lehengas as sarees to talking about the desi style representation in television shows, and films, this year has taught us a lesson in Indian, and NRI fashion. For the unversed, it was back in the month of April, this year, when social media’s darling–Diet Sabya welcomed views on desi v/s NRI fashion. The debate inaugurated a conversation with the different perspectives put on India’s traditional, and culture-appropriate trends, and if NRIs are really clueless about what’s bharaat’s taste in fashion? With some nodding along, some others threw in valid points around the lack of awareness of trends and great India-born traditional silhouettes amongst those who live in the west.

And while in the past few months, the debate took a back seat on the internet, actress–Priyanka Chopra recently dug it out to share her take on it. During her latest visit to India, Chopra sat down for multiple rounds of media interaction. In conversation with journalist– Janice Sequeira, Chopra shared a piece of her mind on this hot topic and made some valid points. Differentiating taste from access to Indian designer collections, Chopra elaborated on the availability, and exposure to a wider spectrum of Indian fashion, as compared to the west.

With respect to NRIs, Priyanka talks about the idea of “what’s normal” for them, and said, “they are exposed to a lot of western fashion on an everyday level, and that’s their normal. So, when Diwali comes, that’s the one moment that you get to dress in Indian clothes. And it is not their normal to pick the best that they can.” Priyanka also stressed on the fact that a lot of her Indian-American friends are trying to understand Indian fashion and learn about karigari, embroideries, and designers. She also revealed how she tries to educate a lot of her American friends about traditional Indian fashion.

Well, that’s Priyanka making some interesting points around the much-talked-about NRI gate. And also with time, one thing that seems to grow beyond the usual is the shift in awareness. For everyone complaining about soap operas with Indian characters, sporting “tacky” Indian clothes, and doing the least to educate their western co-stars about the same, it sure is changing. And an appropriate example of the same was the latest season of Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever. Besides picking some really cool knitwear for protagonist Devi, her mom–Nalini was spotted slaying the best of Indian designers. From modern-day kurtas, concept dresses to impressive sarees, showrunners, and costume designers surely made an effort to shut the debate around “clueless, non-fashionable NRIs.” And just like that, we will soon have Carrie Bradshaw identifying the difference between sarees, and lehengas.
