Natasha Poonawalla’s Experiments With A Saree Unbox The Fascinating Relationship Between Classic And Contemporary

Natasha Poonawalla’s sartorial experiments with a saree have always soaked in the spotlight. From her marvellous appearance in Sabyasachi met Schiaparelli saree at the Met Gala this year to her meeting with the British royals in a slim cut, cross-strap blouse and lime saree, Poonawalla has been pushing the envelope and inspiring the way we wear the drape today.

With a deeply routed affinity towards the six yards, Natasha’s maximalist style has helped this category of dresses in draping a perfect saree. Besides taking India’s favourite silhouette on a world tour to spicing it up with flavourful fusion, Natasha makes every piece unique for herself. And now in her latest trial with a saree, Poonawalla dialled up her favourite fashion stylist–Anaita Shroff Adajania to give her drape a spicy twist. For Bollywood’s go-to fashion guru, this again was an exciting task. In new pictures on her Instagram, we spotted the socialite in an ethereal white saree. The see-through saree featured classic Sabyasachi embroidery that reminded us of a sweet spring.

The carefully aligned branches of flower buds, formed a dainty overlay on the silhouette, in the shape of white thread embroidery. Adding to this spring-themed saree was a heavy mix of differently sized pearls, that also found a spot in the crowded embroidery on her backless blouse.

The saree further came bordered with a frill trim that also featured a sincerely running line of floral embroidery. The long-trailing drape further found a match in an exciting bandhgala, a tweed jacket by Chanel. Much like a menswear staple, the tweed in ash grey and neat white sprinkled power on the ensemble with checkered buttons clashing with the saree’s pearls. The exciting collaboration with Sabyasachi and Chanel, contributed equally to the look, like their lengths touching the floor.

Natasha further trusted a combination of two white flowers and shimmer appliqué hair accessory to decorate her curled-up coiffed hair bun. A close collaborator to over-the-top jewellery, Natasha picked up a two-tier pearl neckpiece and a pair of bold pearl studs to finish off the look. What further injected a sense of colour play, was Poonawalla’s gigantic emerald ring and edgy pearl-gold manicure.

For Poonawalla fashion is a learnt lesson, that she sure has mastered. Apart from posing with the fashion world’s biggest names to making her way into prestigious galas and fashion weeks, Poonawalla often sticks to the fragrance of her motherland, which is packaged in the shape of a saree. With designs by Sabyasachi being her no-brainer choice, Natasha has always trusted the designer to achieve a classic met contemporary look. A by-product of her ensembles is the designer’s international collaborations, which always offer an exciting vision for us.

Previously as well, Natasha picked up a lime-green saree by celebrated couturiers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The sultry twist to the dyed chikankari drape was brought to our screens by a cross-strap blouse in the colour white. The number featured a bellowing bow, and back tie-up, which added a youthful flavour to the traditional silhouette. Besides that, Poonawalla’s experiment with the sarees has also welcomed a power-packed pantsuit to the picture. For a special awards night, Poonawalla picked up a set in blush pink, to style an embroidered saree.

Not just that, but Natasha made headlines with her version of gilded glamour to walk the Met Gala red carpet. The gown-saree by Sabyasachi found its perfect match in Schiaparelli’s fitted bustier in gold. The look came alive with precious gemstones, that decorated her crown, hair band, bangles and manirings.

For the takers of statement designs, Natasha Poonawalla’s saree styles work best as tutorials to help you dress up. In this case, the socialite helps even a much younger generation in finding a love angle with India’s favourite silhouette. Through all her saree lessons, we observe her interest in unboxing unusual pairings. And oh boy, we love it each time.
